Caught in the middle again

I'm being caught in the midle of a few things. I do not want a shower. I just don't. I'm not saying that just to be nice. I want to host a big housewarming party with FH. That is my 'fantasy party' and I do not want my friends to be hit up for another gift after that. I also do not want my sister (MOH) to contact any of my friends (there are reasons).

In your situation I would tell them to either work it out for themselves or tell each one to give you their separate shower. I know it's easy for people to tell you not to get aggravated, not so easy to take that advice!!!

Where I grew up (Fairfax, VA) its not uncommon at all for a bride to have mroe than one shower--simply to keep everyone happy. If your FSIL and sister want to both throw you a shower --let them. Each shower will have some of the same people invited, but will have a lot of different people --simply b/c they are thrown by different people. LEt each of them throw you a shower -and if your FSIL's cousin wants to throw you a shower, too --let her!

As I see it, they are both wrong.

There should have been a conversation to discuss the shower before ANYTHING was booked or planned.

I think the ONLY person who would have a right to go ahead and book stuff without talking to anyone would be the mother of the bride. Other than that, they all should have discussed options before anything was planned.

Can you get your FH to mediate this? You really shouldn't have to get involved. And while I realize your sister is mad, she is not marrying into FSIL's family, you are. So later on, she can simply walk away from this whole situation, but you will have to have a relationship with your FH's family for life.

Technically, proper etiquette says that the bride's family is not supposed to throw the shower, although most people don't pay attention to that now. Perhaps that contributed to your SIL deciding to throw it for you. If they can't agree, do 2 showers and keep it seperate m- your family at your sister's and his at his sister's, because from what you are describing, it may not run smoothly even if they do end up planning one shower together. I think you should tell your sis to leave you out of it and figure out what she wants to do herself.
