Have a question about placeards. . .

Okay, I am wondering if the placecards HAVE to be written as
Mr. & Mrs. John Doe

OR can they be

John & Mary Doe

I ask b/c we have a number or couples who are not married and both their names are going on the place card, also we have 2 couples that have the same name -- We have 2 Mr. & Mrs. J*** M******. The wifes have different first names. I suppose on that one I coul put the wife's first name to distinguish.
