Have my reception on a yacht??

Have my reception on a yacht??

I am debating having my wedding reception (about 75 people) on a yacht that will sail around NY Harbor for 4 hours. Can anyone offer some advice? It seems like a wonderful and unique idea, but I would really like to hear from someone that actually did it,,,,pros and cons?

I didnt do it.. but I was supposed to have my wedding reception on the Empress yacht in Freeport. I think its a wonderful idea. I think the only thing negative anyone asked was wether or not everyone I was inviting was ok with the water and would not get sea sick. Once you start sailing they cant get off or leave early like some ppl do at a regualar wedding. But other than that I think its such a nice idea. Latinlady a soon to be bride here won the Z100 wedding on a yacht sailing from NYC.. her wedding is soon. If its something you are set on doing then go for it. I regret not doing it sometimes..

Re: Have my reception on a yacht??

We went on a dinner cruise w/ another couple a few years ago. I'm sure there are some that are great, but the one we went on was terrible. It was one of the ones that left from Chelsea Piers. The boat was ugly, the food and service were terrible.
It was wayyyy overpriced. I think it was really geared for tourists.

That was just my experience w/ 1 boat. I'm sure there are others that are great. Just be sure to see the actual boat ahead of time and def do a food tasting!

one of my co-workers and my aunt did this- I was not present for either but I heard only great things (no stories of sea sickness and my dad would have told me)

one thing was on one ship the bathrooms were down a narrow flight of stairs, there were a lot of falling drunk people

edit: I really thought FH and I would love to use a boat since we are both boating people but he didn't want to for some reason... go for it!

I think it's a cute idea, but I wouldn't do it only b/c some people could get sick... or the older couples may not like it... I would save that for the bachorlette party or something...

my uncle and his former wife did this - it left from freeport, but my other uncle (the best man) spent the entire reception being sick because he gets sea sick. i personally wouldn't do it because i would be afraid of something like that happening.

i would also be concerned with people hitting traffic and missing the boat leave port....then you are stuck paying for people who didn't make it and then you have angry guests who just missed the boat because of traffic/accidents or something they couldn't control

the pro is that its something more unique, you can have a beautiful view

con-people can get seasick. I get seasick very easily and quite a few ppl i know also get seasick. When a boat, ship, yacht moves faster its not as bad bc you dont feel the waves as much but when its going slow you feel every wave, for a wedding i will assume its going very slow or sitting there so i would just be afraid of that.

Besides people getting sea sick, if the weather is bad can the yatch even really go out?

I think thats a great idea!! When FH and I first looked at RH's we looked at nautical cruise lines on the nautical mile in LI. It was really nice and different. When I asked BM about getting sea sick, she explained that the boat feels the same way a cruise boat feels, so that it would be fine. I really liked them. The website is www.nauticalcruiselines.com. Good luck!

Oh yeah, not sure if cost is a factor but we were quoted 13,000 and change for 120 for CH and dinner, on a Sunday evening (Columbus day weekend). You said you were looking at about 75 people so the cost would be significantly less. I spoke with Debbie.

Re: Have my reception on a yacht??

When DH and I were looking at RHs we considered this idea and even spoke to a few yacht companies but decided against it because of certain factors we wouldn't be able to control. One was that what if people get seasick? They can't just turn the boat around and go back to shore....those guests will either not come or if they do come, will not have good memories of your wedding....another was that I was afraid of the food. DH and I are foodies and really afraid that the food wouldn't be good....there weren't too many brides on here at the time that could vouch for the food, and we had never been to a wedding on a boat so we had no reference point. THe other-the biggest factor-was the weather....if it rains or God forbid thunderstorms, everyone is stuck inside a rocking boat (the waves get rough when it rains, esp if it's also windy) and the yachts are not that roomy inside...so it would be cramped...and no one would be able to go out on deck to enjoy the weather incl guests who might be seasick (ugh). SO we had our wedding on the water instead.
One alternative you could consider would be if you got married at Chateau La Mer. If you have your ceremony there they have the wedding couple come in to the recpetion or CH on a boat/yacht. So you get your boat and a RH that's on land...they are the only RH that I know of that does this!!!
(Sorry for the bad visual just being honest ).

Re: Have my reception on a yacht??

I have been a guest at a wedding like this. It was very nice and really won't work that well for more than 75 people. The only negatives:

1. the bathrooms were tiny and downstairs and if the boat was rocking, it was a little treacherous in heels with a cocktail or two.

2. There were a few people who were unable to eat/drink because they were bothered by the motion of the boat. No one got sick that I saw but there were a couple of green faces.

3. Some guests didn't like it because they couldn't leave when they wanted to. Also, one couple missed the wedding because they hit traffic and were late. The boat leaves when the boat is supposed to leave.

The positives:

1. The view! We went around NY Harbor past the statute of liberty and it was beautiful.

2. The service was amazing. Because it's best suited for a smaller group, there was never a wait for anything.

My son, FDIL, and I looked into yachts. The ones leaving from Manhattan were beautiful.
There were a couple of problems though. The parking for some was in New Jersey. Some had a parking fee (I think around $8). Some had steps, making it difficult for seniors. The amount of food was considerably less than regular RH unless you wanted to pay extra.
On the other hand, I have friends who went on dinner cruises and they said they were unforgettable. If the weather is good it would be an AMAZING day. Unfortunately, the thought of bad weather on a yacht can scare some people.

Ive been at a wedding on a boat and I didnt like it. the boat kept rocking when we were having dinner people were getiing sick the wedding was 5 1/2 hours long and people wanted off the boat after 3 hours. the boat wasnt that big so they was no where to go. the noly good thing was it was a beautiful summer day and their were alot of people working or thier tans on the top deck rather than being at the party.

I've never been on a yacht for a wedding but for a dinner cruise yes. I love it but some people may not take well to riding on a boat. So, that's something you have to think about. But, other then that great idea.
