Have to quit smoking

Have to quit smoking

Damnit. I came down with a pretty bad cough and I refuse to be sick for more than 2 weeks. So once I kick this cough, I'm kicking smoking once and for all. This time I mean it.

Anyone thinking of quitting/ just quit?

I'm scared to be honest!! I love my cigs in the morning!!!

Yea..I tried recently but then went back because FH did (I know...lame..)

We are both planning to quit at the end of the month. I have patches being sent to me.

I am scared because I do enjoy smoking but to be honest I have been getting really scared lately for my health. Something is telling me I need to stop NOW.

Yeah I called NYC Quits and they're sending me free patches.

Did you hear about the 'Smoke 51' or something like that? Its this battery operated cigarette that actually puffs out smoke with a USB cable to 'charge' it to your computer. Some guy at my job showed me it online. LOL but i feel a little silly smoking a plastic cig!!!

Re: Have to quit smoking

a few years back i quite cold turkey and did it fairly easily,...then i got asthma which my doc told me actually happens often when people quit! so...needless to say i started again out of aggrivation. i will not quit before the wedding because the stress of it all will kill me. My rule is when its time to try for a baby thats when i stop...we plan on starting that fairly quickly so thats good... BUT
i WILL NOT have a cigarette once my gown goes on! Imo a smoking bride is just gross!

I quit smoking 2 years ago - it's tough and every once in a while I still want a cigarette, but it's so worth it not to smoke...especially with the price of cigarettes these days.

Good luck to everyone! You can do it!!!

Re: Have to quit smoking

My fiance's father passed away during heart surgery this past August at 65. He had always told fh and I to quit and we never listened. After he died unexpectedly, we decided it was literally a life/death situation and kicked the habit. In part, it was a tribute to his dad--it needed to be done.

I smoked for 12 years and fh for 20. I used the patch (from NYC quits) and FH used the inhaler (he still uses it from time to time).

Neither of us have even had a DRAG of a cigarette since September 15th. We were really heavy smokers, but doing it together really helped.

I used to smoke. I quit 3 years ago. FH just quit a few weeks ago using meds. It works really well if all else fails.

Was it Chantix? Thats what my mom used to stop smoking. It works but unfortunatly I dont think its covered by insurance.

Re: Have to quit smoking

My dad used halls with menthol to kick his habit. You have to find something to put in your mouth that's not food. And seeing your doctor will help a lot too. GOOD LUCK! You're making one of the most important decisions you can, not only for yourself but for your kids and FH too!

I quit a few year ago. Just do it, Donna. Don't think of all crazy schemes of how you'll do it/when you'll do it/smoke your lungs out before you set your date. Just say this is disgusting and I don't want to die and QUIT!

Re: Have to quit smoking

I quit smoking last year cold turkey. The hardest part wasn't the physical withdrawl, but just the routine. The hardest without a doubt is the first morning cigarette- once you get past that- the rest of the day is much easier.

I started going to the gym more and running when I quit (I didnt want to gain weight from quitting). That also helped because I saw much more I could excercise. Since I quit, I rarely get sick (I used to get sick all the time when I smoked). I just FEEL healthier.

Re: Have to quit smoking

I used Zyban back a few years ago when it first came out and I kicked the habit in 5 days. You start taking the pills and you continue to smoke.. what was SUPPOSED to happen is you set a quit date about 10 days after you start taking the pill, and it really helps... but what ACTUALLY happend was, I went to light up my ciggy on my way to work like I did every morning.. Craving my Marlboro Light, I inhaled and gaged.. I literally had to pull over because I started gagging and almost puked.. Never touched them again.

I have about 8 or 9 people that I recommended it to who also had success with it.

I stopped almost 10 years ago, so did FH, he went back and is now quitting for the new year, I'm tired of kissing an ashtray and having my furniture and his clothes smell like smoke, it's really gross. It's funny, right after I stopped smoking, I couldn't STAND the smell, and I quit cold turkey, I hope it works out for you, it's a crappy habit to have to break but once you do, you'll feel so much better!!!

I have had the greatest luck in prescribing Chantix to my patients. It's not covered by insurance, but your doc should have some coupons to help you cover the start-up kit. Also with the starter kit comes a website and phone counselors that help throughout your time quitting.

However, if you are need your insurance to pick it up, try Wellbutrin ER. I helps you slowly quit without any ill effects AND it helps you lose weight. I put my diabetics on it so they don't gain weight when they quit smoking.

FM me if you need any help

Re: Have to quit smoking

DEFINITELY DO IT! I know that's easy to day. We all have our 'thing'- myself, I'm chewing my way to an early grave. So when someone tells you to 'quit' whatever it is your 'thing' is, if they don't share the same addiction, they have no idea how tough it is. But I'd like to share my experience with smoking...

My mom has smoked forever. By brother and I both begged her to quit, and she refused. She would always say, as soon as something happens to my lungs, I'll quit. Of course, by then, it's too late.

She has always been healthy as a horse, and that may be part of how she deluded herself. Add to that her mother did two things her whole life- smoked, and ate butter. She lived until 85. It's easy sometimes to tell yourself that you'll be okay.

A few years ago, Mom started getting horrible coughs. But she's fiercely proud, so she refused to admit her problem. But one day, things got so bad, she couldn't breathe at all. She went to the Hospital. That's when she quit, 3 years ago.

Now, she has COPD and PVC. She can barely walk without turning red, having heart palpitations, sweating, and breathing like she just ran a marathon. I'm watching my mom fall apart, and it is devastating.

Add to that that we have always had a tumultuous relationship- so now, as I watch her have trouble, I am riddled with guilt, sadness, pain, etc. As hard as our relationships are with our parents, when it comes down to it, at least for me, I love my mom incredibly, and all of the other difficulties we've had in our lives have suddenly, at least for me, fallen to the wayside.

I know this seemingly has nothing to do with your post, but I want you to know how hard it is for those who love you to watch you be hurt in any way. I know my loved ones feel the same about me and my struggles, sometimes you just don't want to hear it.

But this smoking thing is an insidious killer, and I wish I wish I wish my mom had stopped years ago. Because she didn't, she is faced with missing watching her grandkids grow up. She is almost incapable of physical activity at the age of 65. She, and all of us, are in great pain.

Please spare yourself this grief. I know, we can all get hit by a bus, etc. But this is a bus you can stop, you know?

And I know what a hypocrite I am here- I can stop the chocolate bus, but for some reason, I feel powerless against it. Some days are better than others. But give it a try. It's not just yourself that you're saving.

Best of luck to you!! Let us now how it goes.
