I would try to meet with him. IMO, you get a better understanding of someone and their business in person.

Almost, but did go in and see them. It was my photographer, I loved their photos from the moment I saw them, but I knew it was a big investment, so I made my appointment and booked them right after out meeting. I also made sure that any other photogs, we saw first!

ETA:: Sorry, I wouldn't recommend not seeing them, as they may not be all that you were hoping, I agree with the other poster that meeting in person says a lot about how you will work together for your wedding. Good luck!

I agree... you may get a better feel about their work if you meet with them in person!!

Good luck!

Well, I met with my band leader, and saw a DVD of them, but since they don't showcase, I didn't get to see them live. Is that the same thing? In my case, I was VERY happy with the final product!

ETA; Oh yeah, I also never heard or met with our trumpet players for the ceremony, and as it turned out, one of them was from the NY Symphony Orchestra...so yeah, they were more than a little OK!

I actually booked my Officiant without ever meeting him !! We spoke on the phone a bunch of times and I felt like I knew him. On the day of my wedding, when he walked into my suite to meet me in person, I almost fell off my chair because he looked so much like my DH !! DH has 2 brothers that also look like him, so it was really funny. He actually made a joke about it during our ceremony.

I say if they come highly recommended, then go for it, but that's just my opinion. I'm not a fussy person, AT ALL, so doing stuff like this is no big deal for me, but I know it is for some girls. Good Luck.

HELLO FELLOW CT'ER....

I work in CT, live in NY (well not for long, leaving my job in CT in two weeks) ANYWAY...

I booked the following vendors w/out meeting them:
Vinny from High Voltage Sounds (DJ)
Marianela Vera (Photography)
Romantique Limosines (Limo's)
Maxine (DOC)

Some of them actually give you a discount if you don't have to meet w/them! I'm doing fine - I went through referrals, and I trust them 100%!

HI, I am in VA so I understand how hard it can be.... my parents booked some of my vendors and I ended up changing them since they didn't do as much research as I. I pretty much made whirlwind trips to NY to meet with vendors before I booked them....I think it's kind of hard to do it w/o seeing them and getting a feel for them..that being said if you have seen them in the past at other weddings or gotten referrals, I think it can be doable.

for something as important as band/DJ or photographer I would definitely meet with them. For band, I was sure I was gonna LOVE one of em based on recommendations, but they ended up being my last choice. Everyone has different opinions.....

I planned from Westchester.

I booked my limo without seeing them.

and I booked my make up artist without a trial or meetignher at all.

I just saw 1 picture of somone I knew, who's make up she did & she was reccommened by my mom's hair salon.

I booked my band from meeting with them, but didn't see them live.

No regrets.

I dont' know about DJ's though, since bands are a little different. Ask a lot of questions on the phone & see if you can get reccommendations-- it should be fine.

I never went to Audrey's Bakery - Ordered my chocolate fountain from them - it was just too far away!!! Besides it wasn't a huge deal and it was easy doing everything over the phone

I also didn't meet my Jazz Trio until the day of the wedding.. but they did send me a cd and pictures of performances

I also never met a photographer that I hired to do part of the favors... taking table and group shots of everyone at the wedding... we worked through email only.

no way, Jose! I had a bad enough experience with a vendor who I DID meet. So, ever since then, I was extremely cautious!

No, but I did book a few vendors after only seeing one of each type. My flowers were booked on the spot and my hall!

I didn't see any limos before I booked Royalty. Honestly, I figured how different could one limo be from another and I got a great price for just booking over the phone.

It depends on the vendor and cost. If something is costing me 5k you better believe Im on it but like the limo bus- I didnt have to see the bus but I met with them and saw pictures of it. when you are out of town like yourself sometimes things like that happens, trust your judgement and keep a close contact via telephone rather than email- you get a better feeling of personality that way.

I didn't meet with any of my vendors before they were booked. I relied on my sister and my dad. It was to hard to go to NY all the time, since I live in VA.

Not yet but I would not have a problem with it as long as I have seen their work and spoken with them over the phone or internet

Yes, I booked my videopgrapher without meeting him. One of our friends used him and his samples were incredible. I would up meeting him about 2 months after I booked him.

nope.

however, if I lived far away like you do, I proabbly would - but only after someone close to me met with them first.

ETA: I did book the limo co. sight unseen. I heard nothing but great things about them. you've seen 1 limo... you've seen 'em all
