How much does it hurt? I am deathly afraid of the dentist. I got my teeth cleaned on Saturday (i am so sensitive it was painful!)

I had a root canal last year, and honestly, I thought it hurt less than a filling.
Not bad at all. But yes, you should take the day off

Like some of the girls mentioned, I also was not give pain meds. The doc told me to take 2 Advils every 4 hourse, even if it didn't hurt b/c Advil helps with any swelling.

ive had 4... two in the front two in the back...
the two front were alot easier...and i didnt need a post cap which made it VERY easy...
the two in the back i felt a bit more, but not too bad.. the only thing i didnt like is when they prep the tooth for the cap after the post.. all the blood...

The root canal itself doesn’t hurt IMO. The thing about it that to me is very frightening is the fact that you have to get 3 novocaine needles for it – I am terrified of needles, and I hate the feeling of the novocaine going in! I remember feeling a little sore once the novocaine wore off, but nothing too bad. And I am the biggest baby when it comes to going to the dentist.

It depends on the dentist.
I had one that did one on Long Island (he's in Bethpage.....I can't remember his name)
But he gave me sweet air (ie: laughing gas) and shot me up good with novacaine. You can feel the pressure but not the pain. And they can give you tylenol for the pain and swelling afterwards.
My present dentist - in NYC - same thing. He's super wonderful. I pay alot for him (and no dental insurance!) but he's so worth it.
I am a scardy cat too and sensitive normally (maybe not my teeth tho) but seriously, I have had root canals and gone back to work afterwards. Also my present doctor does root canals in stages, I went 3 times for one to be done.

A root canal is not that bad at all. You get shot up good w. novicane. And if the tooth is hurting badly, any residual soreness from that is nothing compared to a toothache. I have a really nice dentist. I am surprised he ever gets any work done b/c him and the assistant joke all the time and make me laugh.

Don't be scared. The procedure is not painful. The only thing I found annoying is keeping my mouth open for 40 minutes.
The only discomfort you feel is after it's over and the numbness goes away, and that is healed by some advil and a good night sleep!

I know it's easier said than done but DON'T be scared. It's really not the bad. The injection and the anticipation were the worst for me. I was fine afterwards. Actually the only thing that hurt (I was a little sore) afterwards was where he put the needle.
