How much does it hurt? I am deathly afraid of the dentist. I got my teeth cleaned on Saturday (i am so sensitive it was painful!)

Honestly It s**Ks I had it last monday and I posted about it! It is in no way fun or painless but get it done you eventually will feel a million times better. They do give you pain killers after to eleviate the pain.

The root canal itself doesn’t hurt IMO. The thing about it that to me is very frightening is the fact that you have to get 3 novocaine needles for it – I am terrified of needles, and I hate the feeling of the novocaine going in! I remember feeling a little sore once the novocaine wore off, but nothing too bad. And I am the biggest baby when it comes to going to the dentist.

it wasn't that bad...all I felt was the tugging as he pulled the nerve out....they gave me Vicodin that I didn't even bother with...I used Advil

I agree that the procedure itself doesn't hurt. I'm also afraid of needles but after the first shot of novacane, you really don't feel the others. The only bad part of the procedure itself is that it takes a long time. Your dentist will give you painkillers to alleviate the pain afterwards. I was terrified when I had to get it done but it really wasn't that bad. I think I was more nervous about the hype of it being painful and was relieved after it was done. I was fine enough to go back to work after I had it done. Good luck.

I think I got the short end of the stick with my root canal! I got no pain killers!

I had one and it didn't hurt - it was just uncomfortable because it took a long time. It was definitely worth it because I was in so much pain beforehand. Good luck!

OK... I'm a guy so you know I have NO tolerance for pain.... heehe....
I got a root canal about 1 1/2 years ago.. It didn't really hurt. The novocaine hurt a bit.. but once you numb up... you'll be fine.
Make sure that they post and then cap it.. My dentist for some reason didn't.. the post broke and it opened up a number of issues.. nothing serious... but I was p-o' ed as you can imagine. You'll be fine. Don't worry!
I have had 3!!!!! and one was BAD....in HS I refused to get a root canal...so they filled it...and 10 years later I was brewing a huge infection there...so bad...the dentist couldn't do it in one day!!!
but I had the BEST dentist in the world!!! Dr. Linsky in Great Neck...it didn't hurt AT ALL...I would count too when he was drilling....I never got to 60 in all 3 of the root canals (the counting helps me...b/c he told me it could be about 4-5 min...so I thought I would count to 300)
the only part about the afterwards is that it is hard to eat/drink with all that novacain...think Kramer in Seinfeld...but it didn't hurt one bit!!!

I had an emergency root canal last weekend. It was on Saturday so I didn't have to take off from work, but I think you should because you may need to take painkillers afterwards and you shouldn't drive while taking them. Like most others said it was the novacaine that hurt the most. The procedure was long but since I was numb it didn't hurt at all. The next day my mouth was a little sore but it was nothing compared to the toothache I had before the root canal! It actually hurt the most for me in the pocket...$1000 since I don't have dental insurance. NO MORE ROOT CANALS until September!!!

I've had a few root canals and they really aren't painful IMO. I have the middle of the road tolerance to pain. Are you getting it done over a series of visits or all in one shot? I had soem a few years ago and it was over 3 or 4 visits but last time was maybe 2 years ago and my dentist had a specialist who did it all on one visit. Better way - it doesnt get dragged out.

I’ve had several root canals, one after a really bad infection. IMO, they don’t hurt, what sucks about it is that they put that stupid rubber dental dam in your mouth and then proceed to talk to you afterwards. I have low tolerance for pain, and it didn’t hurt. The novocaine needles pinch, but nothing to cry over. Afterwards, I had to take an antibiotic to ward away any infection, but I don’t believe I got pain killers. It was a little sore, but manageable. Good Luck!

Ive had 5, if your dr is good you shouldnt have a problem. It may be soar, you can take 2 advils before.

Aint that the truth.
i had an idiot dentist.. it took me over a MONTH to be complete.
Drill out, clean.. temp, take out temp, Drill out, take impressions, temp, Take out temp, put in final. Like 5 visits.. it was horrible.
I hated it..
THe crud to take the impression.. mine was a back molar.. i felt like I'd swallow that stuff...ewwww
I FELT IT ALL! I dont care WHAT they say they shot me with.. I felt it down to the nerve.. the grinding and sanding.. at one point he put a needle like thing down the hole and I jerked back .. he said 'oh the nerve' yeah.. the nerve!!!
Animal he was.. I stopped seeing him after that.. it was my ONLY root canal and Im STILL senitive in the area 3 years later. They say my gum was affected by it.
