Have you ever noticed? A brief vent by Me....
A brief vent by Michele:Since I got diagnosed with the diabetes everyone that knows my stepmother seems to knows someone who also had it- a sister, a wife, a daughter, a friend, the women who makes the coffee at the deli- anyway each of them has a different RX and a different opinion on whether or not I should be on insinlin. Of course, NOT one of these people are a doctor and none have ever seen ANY of my test results or blood sugar levels. One guy said, 'Well my wife didn't need any meds as long as her sugar levels were under 140' so Lucille called me right up to tell me that. She knows my diabete's doctor said my levels need to be under 120. I then asked my doctor about the number difference to calm my stepmother's fear and she said '140 is the OLD standard from many years ago. We use the current recommendations from the American Diabete's Society and the American Council of OBs' I told Lucille this to make her feel that a)I am not just doing whatever some crack pot tells me and b) that my doctor is a REAL diabetes doctor. I also told her that my midwife showed my test results to 2 OBs in the hospital and they all agreed that the diabetes doctor is doing the proper treatment, plus they knew the diabetes doctor by reputation. And when I went for my u/s the head of OB/GYN for the hospital reviewed my chart and the notes from the diabetes doctor and concurred. Today I get another phone call that one of the girls in the office was told she was only borderline and doesn't need any meds and maybe I should speak to her doctor (now, mind you no one even know my test results) and that another women in the office has a diabetic husband and his sugar levels do not have to be under 120, they can be under 130 or something. Okay- I am not a diabetic man. I have Gestational Diabetes which is a totally different condition and is treated very differently as I am carrying another person inside of me and need to take care of that person as well as myself and 2) if you don't know my test results how can you tell me that I am only borderline or not?
So I told Lucille- I am seeing a specialist who has handled hundereds of GD patients and in all that time has only had a hand full of over 9lb babies (which is what they want to avoid) and that my blood sugar levels are ALL over the place when I wasn't on the meds and that many OBs treat this differently since they are NOT diabetic doctors and most have a 25% c-section rate anyway so they might not be as concerened with needing to do one.
But have you ever noticed that when you get something, every non-medical person you knows has a medical opinion?

How annoying!!! People without medical degrees should keep their opinions to themselves unless directly asked!

I think people are just trying to help. Would you rather them not even acknowledge you? No one is telling you to even listen to them. People like to feel helpful...JMO

I am NOT mad just annoyed. It isn't my stepmom who is the problem ,but why would someone tell her 'well my husband is treated differently' DUH!! No kidding. I would expect that. It is more about how people come out of the woodwork to give medical advise and they just scare her. I felt like telling her to please call th doctor herself and get all the answers she needs.

I know what you are saying. Everybody sickness is different. My father had a heart and kidney transplant and her was told he can do moderate exercise. Someone said to him, 'Well now that you have the heart of a 30 year old...when are you going to start running the marathon??' Of course, my father just laughed it off, because he knows what his doctor said to him! but he know his friends were just trying to see how he was doing.

Everybody always has an opinion, a story or an experience. I am sure they are trying to be helpful, but it can be so annoying. Get used to it though Michele. It gets worse when you have kids. Then everyone wants to give you parenting advice. Hang in there!!!!

Sheesh! I feel your pain - really I DO! I have a family member (who shall go nameless!) that LOVES to dole out medical advice (and old prescriptions
) to ANYONE who shares a medical condition. It is INFURIATING!
Tell Lucille to stop discussing your condition with everyone she meets! That will prevent anyone from telling her what they think you should do!
