Have you heard of FAKE CAKE?

Original post by bellaandfella

I had been tossing around the idea of having a fake cake.. let me explain... I want this cake that'll prolly cost around 1,500. and no way do I want to pay for that. So my thoughts were to ask a baker if they would make the first layer..usually the biggest in terms of width out of real cake and then the upper layers in FAKE CAKE..which would be styrofoam that's decorated with fondant and all the other pretty design elements, flowers, etc. Now the cake would look like any other cake.. totally beautiful and covered with fondant and all the bells and whistles..just the bottom layer..the one we'd cut and feed each other for photos and such would be real. Then of course the cake would be taken away to be cut up and served. We'd purchase a supplement sheet cake just in case there isn't enough of the FAKE CAKE.

So just on a whim i decided to google fake cake and lo and behold.. there's a couple of companies that actually provide this service.

Fake Cake 1

Fake Cake 2

They look real and pretty too!

What are your thoughts?

Ok I love this idea but as a few girls mentioned how do you do the whole cake cutting and feeding if it is foam. Anyone have a work around idea?

i think the bottom layer is a real cake and you cut and feed from that. the other layers are fake. i also think there's a more reasonably priced cake (like, a 'normal' cake, so-to-speak) that you can take home with you.

Exactly. OR.. what some women do is pay for the bakery that makes their wedding cake, to make one for them exactly the same ( but a small one) on their 1st anniversary. That way .. you dont have to take up the room in your freezer and it will taste fresh and yummy!
Partial fake cakes are becoming more and more common.
its great for the bride and groom that want a huge wow factor.. even if they have either a small budget or small wedding.

when i went to larkfield manor to price things out last year, i asked about a fake cake, and the guy yelled at me saying that its trashy and that they would never do it.

i think its a wonderful idea, and i would do that in a heartbeat, but beware of your hall telling you they wont do it.

Wowww....that is ridiculous...that would really turn me off

I think thats common. Alot of people have the majority of the cake fake and just a tiny portion real for the cake eatting. Ever notice when you get cake at some weddings the piece they give you is square. Thats why! I think its a good idea.

I guess i'll go with square layers then!

i've heard about it and even read an article about it on msn, which I'll search for! I think it's becoming more and more common to cut costs but still have that cake that fits in wtih your vision. i think it's a great idea!

Yup! I saw it yesterday on Whose Wedding Is It Anyway. It's great esp if you want a LARGE cake or if you wanted a big cake and have a small guest list. They can be up to 50% cheaper!

I think alot of halls that provide the cake do this anyway.

Re: Have you heard of FAKE CAKE?

i think its a great idea, have you priced it out?

I would think though that it woud be about the same cost becase they are still decorating a whole cake... and they are still baking the sheet cake that you have to serve your guests anyway??
i dontknow I just dont see how it woudl be that drastic of a difference?
