Have you heard of FAKE CAKE?

Have you heard of FAKE CAKE?

I had been tossing around the idea of having a fake cake.. let me explain... I want this cake that'll prolly cost around 1,500. and no way do I want to pay for that. So my thoughts were to ask a baker if they would make the first layer..usually the biggest in terms of width out of real cake and then the upper layers in FAKE CAKE..which would be styrofoam that's decorated with fondant and all the other pretty design elements, flowers, etc. Now the cake would look like any other cake.. totally beautiful and covered with fondant and all the bells and whistles..just the bottom layer..the one we'd cut and feed each other for photos and such would be real. Then of course the cake would be taken away to be cut up and served. We'd purchase a supplement sheet cake just in case there isn't enough of the FAKE CAKE.

So just on a whim i decided to google fake cake and lo and behold.. there's a couple of companies that actually provide this service.

Fake Cake 1

Fake Cake 2

They look real and pretty too!

What are your thoughts?

I think thats common. Alot of people have the majority of the cake fake and just a tiny portion real for the cake eatting. Ever notice when you get cake at some weddings the piece they give you is square. Thats why! I think its a good idea.

I heard of that before!!

Even before I started planning the wedding I heard of it on the radio. They said that it is really cost effective and your guests never finish all that cake anyway, so why pay for it?? It was part of like a '10 ways to save $ on your wedding' thing.

I say go for it.

I'm personally just going to take the cake that is included with my RH...but if I had something in mind that I wanted that was over the top and needed to be a special order, I would totally go with a 'fake cake'

i've heard about it and even read an article about it on msn, which I'll search for! I think it's becoming more and more common to cut costs but still have that cake that fits in wtih your vision. i think it's a great idea!

I never heard of that. That's pretty cool though. That way a lot of people can have their dream cake. I never would have thought of that lol.

when i went to larkfield manor to price things out last year, i asked about a fake cake, and the guy yelled at me saying that its trashy and that they would never do it.

i think its a wonderful idea, and i would do that in a heartbeat, but beware of your hall telling you they wont do it.

not a bad idea if a fancy cake is not your budget.

Re: Have you heard of FAKE CAKE?

I went to a wedding where they had that. But it was actually the top that was the real piece and then in the back they just had a sheet cake -it was easier for the servers too since they could cut it up in advance.

And the cake looked gorgeous.

Here's my one tip-

Tell as few people as possible. I was just a date of a guest at this wedding and I found out, everyone was talking about it and looking at it so close to see if they could tell. If I never knew I would have looked at it from far away and always thought of it as a beautiful cake.

Its a great idea and I think I am going to look into it, but try to keep it between me and the baker as much as possible!

Its a great idea-just make sure that your baker will do it. Mine refused to do it-dont know why but she just wouldnt-then again I didnt go to an outside baker, I used the cake included from my RH

Re: Have you heard of FAKE CAKE?

My concern with doing this is how will you do the cutting the cake & feeding each other tradition if the whole cake is fake?

I think most people cut the bottom layer of the cake (that's what we did anyway) ... so that would lead me to suggest that the bottom layer could be real, and the rest could be fake?

But at the same time ...

The other cake tradition is to save the top layer of the cake, freeze it, and eat it on your 1st Wedding Anniversary. So, then I would think it would be better to have just the top (smallest) layer of the cake be real and the rest be fake.

I don't think I've helped at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess my point is to think about what traditions you'd like to incorporate into your wedding before making the decision?

Re: Have you heard of FAKE CAKE?

I have heard of fake cake and a lot of girls do it!!! I have a friend that is almost done with pastry school and since she is in the wedding she is going to make our cake as a wedding gift! She is completely shocked at how much some places charge for just a simple plain cake with fondant because she says that while some cakes are a lot of work they should only cost a fraction of what they really go for!
