Re: Having a child before tenure? Crazy or not?
i dont want to wait until tenure, however if we could time it perfectly i would have the baby at the way end of the school year so that i could return in sept no problem... the only reason why i would wait for tenure is if i wanted to take a bunch of time off, which i dont...

No, I don't think it is crazy. I know a couple of people who had babies before tenure. Honestly, for me (and I don't have tenure) it's whatever happens happens. I just heard someone lost their job after 8 years because the budget failed. I heard about another girl who waited, and then she had trouble getting PG, so it took her another 4 years to get PG. She said she wished she would have started sooner, and not been so concerned with tenure. I say go for it!

I would go for it when you and your husband feel ready and not by a school calendar, tenure or otherwise. Life throws you curves. Nobody knows what the future brings in terms of reproduction. If you wait and then have any sort of difficulty, you may second guess your choices which is something you probably do not want to do. I unfortunately, do not have time on my side and even though it would be very convenient to plan a child around a summer vacation, I cannot guarantee that my eggs will drop when I want them to. Sorry if this sounds depressing but it is something I think about when FH says 'we should wait to have some time together'. I have too much of a family history to wait.

If you're ready to have another baby, then just go for it. I kind of have the same struggle, but a little different. My mom and I have a dance studio and she's planning on retiring at the end of this season (next June.) Since we own it and are the only teachers, maternity leave is out of the question. I would love to get pregnant in November, so even though I'll be as big as a house for the recital, I can have the baby over the summer and get back into shape for classes starting in the fall. Of course that's in a perfect world, but if I get pregnant at another time, I'll just have to figure out a way to make it work for my business.

I live in Westchester and our studio is in Purchase. We don't teach ballroom though, we teach kids (preschool through highschool) tap, jazz, ballet, and hiphop. My mom was a professional dancer when she was younger and when she had kids she started her studio. I danced my whole life, but then I went to college and got a 'real' job. I'm so glad that I quit and went back to dancing!

Although it would be great to wait to be tenured, there is no way I would ever wait. I am not going to plan having a child around a job. Most important thing to me in life is my family and it always will be, everything else comes second, so I would never wait for tenure.

boop- I agree with you COMPLETELY! Unfortunatelly there were 700 applicant for my job. My son got sick with pneumonia twice this year and I had to stay home (my family comes first) I was then asked not to come back next year!!! So I agree with you, but am afraid I will lose my job. Who will hire a teacher who was let go when theres so many else to choose from?
BTW _ I got my job back b/c the union fought them.
I agree with you too and I know how competitive the job market here is. I lost my job a few years ago in a school, because of heath reasons, and it was totally illegal what they did, but I didn't fight it, but I made sure they knew it was wrong and i vowed to myself that I don't care what happens, my health and the health of my family will always be first. I know no matter what, I will always be able to find a new job.

Re: Having a child before tenure? Crazy or not?
My personal opinion is to get tenure first... It is so hard to get a teaching job that is on a tenure track these days. If you have one, you may want to get tenure so that nothing jepordizes keeping your job. I have seen girls have babies before tenure, and they were not asked back the following school year.

if you could wait , wait, BUT there will always be a reason to wait...if you want a child i would try to have a child...i would not revolve my life around the school calendar...i know it is a tough job market out there, but there is always something somewhere...you may have to be flexible though

I think it's a very personal decision. I don't believe in waiting to start a family for a job, any job. This is just my opinion. I know the NYCDOE CANNOT do anything to your position while on maternity ,as long as you have a 'clean record'. I know LI districts have more flexibilty on who they ask back.
Good luck

I am in this situation now...I am not pg yet but on my second year of a leave replacement. I am so torn on whether to stick it out or go for it. Argggh!
