Has anyone gone to or planning to go to Hawaii? We've finally figured out our honeymoon and was looking for last minute hotel suggestions/recommendations before booking and of course any suggestions on what to do while there -
Oahu - Staying at either the Halekulani Hotel (more romantic and a splurge) or Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach (more of a hot-spot)
Maui - Fairmont Kea Lani
Kauai - Either Koa Kea (more boutique/romantic) or the Grand Hyatt (larger property with more amenities)
Thank you!!

I heard the Halekulani Hotel is amazing. Aunt and Uncle just stayed there. We are staying at the Trump International in Oahu. I was told you can't go wrong with the Halekulani, Trump, or Royal Hawaiian in Oahu.
In Kauai I hear the grand hyatt is great. We have a time share and are staying at the Marriott Beach Club otherwise I would've booked the grand hyatt.

Re: Hawaii
I've been to Hawaii twice, once was on my honeymoon (this is my second marriage).
We stayed at the Four Seasons in Maui and the Grand Hyatt in kauai. Previously we stayed at the outrigger in Oahu and in Big island as well.
I think it depends on what you were looking for. If you want a bigger hotel with more restaurants etc, then go for the hyatt/outrigger.
If you want something more intimate, go with Halekulani ( I would personally much rather stay there than the Outrigger), and the smaller in Kauai. My ex and I got married in November and nobody mentioned that there would be a medical conference at the gradn Hyatt. It was super packed the entire time, no upgrades. Don't get me wrong, it was beautiful. However, if we did it again, I would stay somewhere else.
In oahu, I personally do not like the Waikiki area, it's too busy and crowded for me. I prefer the north shore, did you think about Turtle Bay?
The four seasons in maui was amazing and had the best breakfast buffett I have ever had, I am still talking about it 6 years later!! Coconut syrup...oh my god!!!

The Koa Kea was AMAZING. My husband and I stayed there for 4 nights when we were on Kauai. The restaurant in the hotel, Red Salt, was amazing and everyone there was so incredibly nice. The pillow top bed was the most comfortable bed I have ever slept on and my favorite part: because its a smaller boutique hotel, lounges were ALWAYS available around the pool, no matter what time of day you went!

kathleen - I wish I could stay at the four seasons, it looks so beautiful. Coconut syrup sounds amazing!! Thank you for the suggestions!
Ali B - Thank you! Did you feel since it was a smaller hotel you were missing out on anything that a bigger hotel might have offered?
Thanks everyone, this was so helpful!

Re: Hawaii
I forgot to add that even though we stayed at the Grand Hyatt, we only ate dinner there once. The food was very $$ and it wasn't that great. We had breakfast included, which was actually very good, but other then that we always ate dinner out. There are so many good restaurants that you should go out and explore!!
I do not feel that you will miss out on anything at all if you stay in a smaller hotel. Other than more people and larger scale pools etc.
HTH!

For anyone who's been to Oahu, Maui and Kauai - Originally we were going to go to all three for the honeymoon, but FH thinks it's too much traveling in a short time so we are going to do Oahu and Maui only. I feel like I'm missing out on Kauai, but he thinks 'they're all the same'. I know that's not true, but he means either way we'll be in the resort relaxing most of the time anyway. Any opinions?

I personally would probably stick to one or maybe two islands the most. I think 3 is a lot in 10 days especially if yu really want to see the islands. Not sure how you would divide your time but there is so much to do on each island and 3 days isn't really enough to fully enjoy what each has to offer. But I guess it also just depends what kind of travler you are, I just wouldnt want to feel rushed....Plus, you have to remember that the flight to Hawaii is pretty long and takes a lot out of you.

I agree that you should keep it to two islands. I've been to all the islands, and being a native NY'er, I liked Oahu the least. If I had to chose btw Oahu and Kauai, I would pick Kauai hands down bc they are definently not the same!

I've never been but my uncle always raves about the fairmont in Maui. I'd def do Maui out of those choices.

I definitely agree! If you have to pick two islands to go to, make it Maui and Kauai. Kauai is BEAUTIFUL! There isn't much to do on Oahu other than Pearl Harbor and seeing the historical buildings. It's only a 20 minute flight from island to island, so I would just plan a day trip to Oahu. Leave early in the morning, rent a car for the day to drive around and see what you want, and come back that same night!

I 100% agree. You will miss nothing if you skip Oahu, except Pearl Harbor. Book an early morning flight and u can easily see Pearl Harbor. Oahu is too crowded, the beaches weren't anything special, and it's just too touristy. Don't get me wrong, it's beautiful, but Maui and Kauai are a much better choice!

We're going to Maui too. I hear Spago and the Four Seasons is amazing and the restaurant and the Fairmont is supposed to be very good too!
