Hawaii Dilemma (WITH POLL!!)

Original post by SeptBride70

Please take this poll for me...

We are trying to keep costs down on our Hawaii trip. Originally, we were going to just spend and forget about worrying but the more I think about it-- I think we could still go all out and not kill ourselves financially in the process.

So, if you had to choose-- which Island would you OMIT??? I mean, what do you think is the Island that I could remove but it would still be OK and I won't end up regretting it big time... Also, if any of you have been to or heard about Hawaii-- which Island do you think is the best? A must see?

Advice/Opinions please!!!

A big IRISH THANK YOU TO EVERYONE!!!!

If I were you I would skip Kauai. I LOVED Oahu. It had it all!! Beach, snorkeling, shopping, restaurants. I found Kauai itself boring, but we stayed at an amazing five-star resort, so that made the trip.

which resort?

i literally spend hours looking on tripadvisor and going back and fourth with hotels-- i'm so afraid i'm going to make a bad decision or i'm going to wish i went with another hotel

Hilton Hawiian Village on Waikiki beach is absolutely stunning!! You wouldnt be able to go wrong with it.

When we were deciding the travel agent told us to omit staying at the Big Island b/c you can always go there for the day without having to stay there. FH realize that our honeymoon is gonna be $$$ but we wanted to stay at as many islands so were doing Oahu, Kauai, and Maui.

VERY interesting!

THANK YOU

Dani, I chose to get rid of the Big Island. I've been to Maui, Kaui and The Big Island and other than a few impressive volcano's there really isn't much there. If I hadn't gone I wouldn't have felt like I missed anything knowing what I know now. I would have defintiley visited Oahu instead or have extended our time in Kaui (GORGEOUS!).

I know how crazy booking the HM is. We just booked ours finally and I feel like a HUGE weight has been lifted.

Good luck

If you are a person who likes to be doing stuff I heard all the islands are great except Kaui - Kaui is supposed to be more for just relaxing and not really going anywhere.
We were originally going to go to Hawaii, but we're using Fiance's godmother's timeshare and Hawaii was already book for what we wanted. Blah.

Good luck - it's a TOUGH decision where to go - I would suggest you figure out what you want to do first and for how long - like where your day trips would be and activities and then decide how long you want to stay each place and if you want to go at all!

I've been to all 4 islands and I would have to say, it really depends on how you want to spend your HM.

Definitely go to Maui. It has EVERYTHING! Beautiful beaches, shopping, hiking, snorkleing, night life, etc....romantic feel and commerical feel.

Kauaii is much more layed back. No nightlife (that I saw), but it is absolutely gorgeous there! It is the oldest island so the greenery is amazing! Beach and some sightseeing: Napali Coast (boat ride, helicopter or hike), the Canyon (can't remember the name but it is like a mini Grand Canyon), ATV ride (through spots where movies were filmed) etc. Not a whole lot, but some sightseeing. Definitely more of a relaxing island.

The Big Island I loved because I loved the volcano, but it is very touristy. A lot of sightseeing - volcano, waterfalls, black sand beaches - and some shopping but more local shops. Not really any nightlife. only need 2 or 3 days tops I think if you decide to go here.

Oahu - a big city and typical Hawaii all in one. If you stay in Hononlulu it is similar to NYC expect on a tropical beach! LOTS of shopping, restaurants, nightlife - beautiful beach (wakiki) but unless the hotels have a private beach (we didn't stay on the beach so I'm not sure if they do) it gets super crowded! There is also diamond head which has an amazing view if you hike it! If you rent a car, you can drive around the island and you will see beautiful sights. You can also visit the North Shore. If you don't want to do Pearl Harbor, that is really the only other thing that I know of to do there outside of Honolulu.

IMO, I would not go to Oahu if you don't want to go to Pearl Harbor, but that is because I didn't like the big city atmosphere on Hawaii. To me, I prefered the more layed back parts. Just me though. If you were interested in Pearl Harbor, I would definitely say do not skip out on this island. If you want the city atmosphere, definitely don't skip this island because you won't find it anywhere else there.

I know I didn't really give a definite answer, but maybe my overview will help!

thank you!

as of right now i'm thinking of omitting the big island but so i don't miss it entirely-- doing a day trip there b/c FH does want to see the volcanoes and waterfalls.

If you have no desire to go to Pearl Harbor, I would skip Oahu. I was there about 3 years ago and wasn't really impressed with it. I felt like I was in Miami. However, as someone else suggested, if you do go there, the Hilton Hawaiian Village is great!

pearl harbor was very important to me b/c of the meaning and 'doing the right thing' but after the stories i have heard-- i don't think i can do it ... it is beyond upsetting.

THANK you so much for your input!!!

I would say definitely take a day trip there if that is the island you decide to 'omit' The volcano was amazing! Definitely a site you can't see everyday and wouldn't want to miss. Good Luck!!

From what I have researched, Oahu is so built up now that it is like Miami. So I would admit that but maybe take a day trip over to see pearl harbor.

I've heard the same things. My travel agent told us it's like that and that there isn't anything special to do there except Pearl Harbor. We're doing maui for 7 nights.
