Hawaii Volcano bike ride

Going to Kauai and Maui on my honeymoon and curious if anyone has done the bike ride down the volcano. We are discussing doing it but someone told us you can go at sunset and get just as much of a spectacular view as at sunrise. Advice....

We're going to Maui, too. Everyone I've spoken to has recommended to sunrise excursion to do the bike-ride, so that's what we're planning on doing. I figure that it's only one day of waking up so early and it sounds incredible to be above the clouds when the sun rises.

My FH did that with his mom years ago - he said it was completely worth it - it was beautiful. Long ride though!

Re: Hawaii Volcano bike ride

We're going to Hawaii in October and plan to do this...I've heard nothing but good things about it. We thought about the Road to Hana, but heard mixed reviews so decided to stick with the bike tour instead.

Can't wait to go!

We did it!

We did it on our honeymoon last May and I highly recommend it! You get picked up at your hotel at like 3:00 in the morning (this is the hardest part!) and they give you a quick breakfast, give you your gear (helmet, wind suit, gloves, etc), find out how tall you are and how much you weigh (for the bike and the 'line' down the mountain) then load you all back up in a van to go up to the top. Word of advice - DRESS WARM!!!! It is absolutely FREEZING up there waiting for the sun to rise - in the 30s and windy! You can dress in layers and strip down as you go (we wore shorts under jeans with socks and sneakers, tee shirts and sweatshirts)! Once you see the sun rise over the volcano crater which is absolutely one of the most gorgeous, moving things I have ever seen, you get on the bikes for the ride down. I only had to pedal once! It's the steepest slope in the world. Halfway down you stop for brunch and to strip off the wind suits. You end up at a beach on the bottom and back at your hotel by no later than like 1:00 pm...where you immediately fall asleep! Totally worth it! We went with - here's there site: Maui Downhill . Let me know if you have any questions - do it if you can, it's a once in a lifetime thing!

Re: We did it!

honestly...I am very athletic (I have run marathons) but we chose not to do the bike down...and I am very glad I didn't...

1. I got an awful allergy attack and I would have been miserable
2. the roads are so narrow and winding...while we were going up on the bus I was freaking out we were going to hit a biker.
3. you must ride down single file...no chatting or talking

We took the bus ride up and had a great time up and hung out...then rode back down on the bus...

We did it In January!
It was the best!!! definitely worth getting up at the crazy time they pick you up.
We went with the maui downhill riders also. Could not say enough good things about them. Felt totaly safe. I am not athletic to put it mildly and had no problems. So much fun!!!!!!
The best thing to do on maui. We have been there twice, thinking about going again for honeymoon. Been to Kaui too. You will love both islands.
THE BEST
