ok i am going to be put under fh's plan. Now do i have to wait until we receive our certificate in the mail after the wedding to be put under his plan or can it go into effect right after our wedding?
also what do they ask for, what do i need to do and what does he need to do.
I told FH to ask at work but he is hardly at the office so i have to wait for him to find out.
any info would be appreciated. Seems like since i got paid in april for my last day my insurance ends now instead of may which is when its my last day. The cobra is $500 a month, now i would only need it for a month or so but $500 is not worth it. If i go for a doctors visit and pay out of pocket it will be less than that ya know

i believe it depends on the plan. i know at fh's job the second we say i do i'm covered. but i will be keeping my insurance for the entire month of july just in case.
Oooo good to know some do it that way, i am hoping for this lol. FH is going to have to find his way to the office soon to find out or ask the other guys at work. Well i thought i had it all worked out, my last day is in may so i just said ok great ill still be covered through may and by the end of may or beginning of june ill be under fh's plan. Well my job decided to pay me last day in april which is today even for the days i am working in may.
Can they do that? I think if you are working in May and being paid for that work then you should still have your insurance, no? I mean essentially you will still be employed there in May. Hmmm. I would check into that if I were you.
i know i am trying to figure this out right now
oh and yes, if you are working in may, you should be covered at least until your last day there and possibly to the end of the month depending on the plan etc.
I AM hoping but seems like it may be worked out differently bc according to my paycheck it will look like my last day is in april. I asked and she said will come to me later with the forms and stuff so ill find out for sure.
Thank you

Dave is covered under my insurance....
He (prior to our marriage) was covered under the 'domestic partner' clause. Once we got married, he was changed to husband. The insurance company didn't ask for anything. They just changed his status.
oh ok i guess since all the paperwork was done previously so thats why.

Whatever date is on your marriage liscense (date your getting married) will be the date they will make it active but you have to wait till you get it in the mail to send them a copy. For example I wasn't active on DH's until like 4/1 but it was back dated to 2/29 so anything in between that time you can put a claim in for for them to reimburse you. Thats how i think most of them work
oh ok see that makes sense. I was wondering why most are effective wedding date but had to still wait until certificate but now i see

Re: health insurance question for married couples
We each kept our coverage and added the spouses, so we do have duplicate coverage. It is considered primary and secondary coverage.
It all depends upon a company's HR policy, when the effective date is and what you have to show them. I didn't have to prove anything here, just had to have DH sign the forms. DH was on my insurance as of Dec 01, and I was on his effective Jan 01.

I thought it wouldn't go into effect until the day of the wedding. But if I can do it when I get my marriage license that would be awesome!!!!!!!!!!!

they mean when you get your marriage certificate not license. The certificate you receive AFTER your wedding

they usually deduct (if they do) 2 weeks in advance, so you must be covered for 2 weeks after your last date!!

You should check and see if FH's insurance covers domestic partnerships. My FH's does so I am on his insurance already and have been for at least 6 months. You don't need any legal documentation to have a domestic partnership for insurance purposes - and in fact only NYC has legal domestic partnerships, the rest of NY state does not. It's just a term FH's insurance company (Oxford) uses. They define it as people in a committed relationship who are living together. All we had to do was fill out a form attesting to those things and turn it in to FH's HR.
I know not all insurance companies do this, but it is certainly worth asking since you already are without insurance.
Then after you got married, you could just convert it into a marriage.

Re: health insurance question for married couples
I work for the City of NY and its a bit diffrent- I have to wait 60 days after we're married in order to get DH on my insurance whereas he can automatically get me coverage on his since the day we were married and have proof of it via marriage license.
But it would be retroactive since the wedding date.
I think most insurance companies/ employers would want to see the marriage license as proof.

I think in a case like this where it's a domestic partnership they might just need a document signed by FH and you and also notarized maybe if that.

Yup. And ours didn't even require notarization. We really do live together, though.

Re: health insurance question for married couples
I got added to FHs policy under a domestic benefit clause since we live together some insurances allow it even if your not married, I just had to fill out a form with my name social etc and that was it so im sure its not much once you get married.
