health related question

Original post by ILOVEBRIAN2008

so i dunno if u guys remember...but about 2 months ago i passed out (ive passed out several other times) but i finally went to the doctors this time who told me i had a low heart rate also, and they sent me to the cardiologist..well today i had to go to the hospital to get a Tilt Table test....not fun but as soon as they started the test and moved the table i was out..so they said i tested positive and that im neurocardiogenic... its just the reason why i pass out... anyways the doctor perscribed a beta- blocker..i was all fine with all of this until i just looked up online exaclty what a beta blocker was

this is what one site said:
- Long-term use of beta-blockers helps manage chronic heart failure. When you start taking beta-blockers, your heart failure symptoms may become worse (for about two and a half months) while your heart adjusts to the medication. This is a normal effect, but let your doctor or nurse know if you become extremely tired, gain more than 5 pounds, have trouble breathing, or have other signs of congestion or swelling. Once your heart adjusts, you will feel better.

now im nervous about taking it...anyone else on this, or know anything about it?? also another site said that i shouldnt have caffine or alcohol...not that im a caffine fiend but i like to have a cup in the morning and i hardly ever go out and drink..but i like to every once in awhile...do i have to completely stop all that??

I don't know too much about it, I've only heard about it when someone has CHF (congestive heart failure). I would definitely talk to your cardiologist before you start taking it, or even your pharmacist should know what it's generally for...but your cardiologist should be able to tell you why you need and not just give you a general blanket statement about it.

Jenise, I'm on a beta blocker. My heart rate is too fast. I'm on Atenolol. When I first take it, I feel a bit tired, but it passes. So far, this med is bringing my blood pressure down and lowering my pulse rate. Actually, I feel pretty good!! Mary MOB

im going to be taking pindolol..but i have a low heart rate as it is..the one thing the doctor said was that it could make me tired..and if its supposed to lower my heart rate i dont get why im taking it..my heart rate is low normally (im sure when i pass out my heart rate skyrockets but normally its low) and i have low blood pressure also (sometimes its normal, other times low)

Ok, think I found an answer. 'Beta blockers work by affecting the response to some nerve impulses in certain parts of the body. As a result, they decrease the heart's need for blood and oxygen by reducing it's workload. THEY HELP THE HEART TO BEAT MORE REGULARLY' It sounds like beta blockers help to normalize the heart beat, whether it be slow or fast. What do you think? Mary MOB

Re: health related question

the reason they are giving you this drug is because your heart rate is irrgeular other wise you wouldnt be passing out.. but this is what my papers. say...

' beta-blockers 'block' the effects of adrenaline on your bodys receptors, which are part of the nervous system this slows the nerve impulses that travel thought the heart. as a reslut your heart does not have to work as hard because it needs less blood and oxygen. Beta-blockers also block impulses that can cause arrhythmias.

they are advising your NOT to drinking alot of caffine or alcohol cuz ones a stimulant and ones a depressant both can cause the heart to do things out of wack. and this medication is trying to correct it.. but having your one cup of coffee wont hurt you. My book even tells you what meds and herbs you cant have with a druge and that isnt even listed.

Patient Teaching:
Once drug is being taken do not stop it abruptly without your drs approval, if you do stop it abruptly it can cause your b/p and pulse to go up.
take a pulse prior to taking the drug if your lower then 60 beats per min you prob shouldnt be taking it.

Reasons to be taking it:
high blood pressure, heart failure, abnormal heart rates.

thanks so much for writing all that!!!!! def great info! what worries me is that my heart rate is around 48 (i watched the heart monitor when i was bored and the nurse was prepping everything) and it would jump a little higher then that but for the most part it was about 48

First I want to give you . Please find out anout the medication. This hits a soft spot with me. My oldest friend wasnt feeling right. Turns out that she had a heart condition that was excelerated after she had a bad infection. After alot of frustration, tests and meds and doctors she found the MD that saved her life. My point is get as many second opinions as you feel necessary and ask questions.

FH says theres no difference btwn the person that graduated first in the class and last from med school both are called Doctor.

very true, and good point!! i was just with the hospital cardiologist today and he was hardly in the room (the nurse did the whole thing)..so im def going to talk to my doctor to see what he says..and if i do start this medication and feel terrible on it ill go for anotehr opinion i guess..but im so glad that your friend found a great doctor!!!!!

i totally understand your concerns and you should def. speak with your doctor. but my understanding is that when it drops that low is when your passing out.. and then it spikes you come back.. its irregular so this is going to be the best and safest medication for your to regulate our heart rate.. kind like BCP... you may have your period maybe not every month but you still get it.. then you take the BCP to regualte it. i do know from working in my office that beta blockers are a very safe drug.

How is your blood pressure?? its very common for your heart rate to be very low but BP to be high?
