health related question

Original post by ILOVEBRIAN2008

so i dunno if u guys remember...but about 2 months ago i passed out (ive passed out several other times) but i finally went to the doctors this time who told me i had a low heart rate also, and they sent me to the cardiologist..well today i had to go to the hospital to get a Tilt Table test....not fun but as soon as they started the test and moved the table i was out..so they said i tested positive and that im neurocardiogenic... its just the reason why i pass out... anyways the doctor perscribed a beta- blocker..i was all fine with all of this until i just looked up online exaclty what a beta blocker was

this is what one site said:
- Long-term use of beta-blockers helps manage chronic heart failure. When you start taking beta-blockers, your heart failure symptoms may become worse (for about two and a half months) while your heart adjusts to the medication. This is a normal effect, but let your doctor or nurse know if you become extremely tired, gain more than 5 pounds, have trouble breathing, or have other signs of congestion or swelling. Once your heart adjusts, you will feel better.

now im nervous about taking it...anyone else on this, or know anything about it?? also another site said that i shouldnt have caffine or alcohol...not that im a caffine fiend but i like to have a cup in the morning and i hardly ever go out and drink..but i like to every once in awhile...do i have to completely stop all that??

First I want to give you . Please find out anout the medication. This hits a soft spot with me. My oldest friend wasnt feeling right. Turns out that she had a heart condition that was excelerated after she had a bad infection. After alot of frustration, tests and meds and doctors she found the MD that saved her life. My point is get as many second opinions as you feel necessary and ask questions.

FH says theres no difference btwn the person that graduated first in the class and last from med school both are called Doctor.

very true, and good point!! i was just with the hospital cardiologist today and he was hardly in the room (the nurse did the whole thing)..so im def going to talk to my doctor to see what he says..and if i do start this medication and feel terrible on it ill go for anotehr opinion i guess..but im so glad that your friend found a great doctor!!!!!

absolutley if you arent feeling better get a second opinion. and just so you know there are at least 10 beta blockers and they all can effect you differntly so they may just try a different type

thanks so much for writing all that!!!!! def great info! what worries me is that my heart rate is around 48 (i watched the heart monitor when i was board and the nurse was prepping everything) and it would jump a little higher then that but for the most part it was about 48

i totally understand your concerns and you should def. speak with your doctor. but my understanding is that when it drops that low is when your passing out.. and then it spikes you come back.. its irregular so this is going to be the best and safest medication for your to regulate our heart rate.. kind like BCP... you may have your period maybe not every month but you still get it.. then you take the BCP to regualte it. i do know from working in my office that beta blockers are a very safe drug.

How is your blood pressure?? its very common for your heart rate to be very low but BP to be high?

its good to know that its safe! my heart rate is low normally, not just when i pass out...this morning i came into the room and they hooked me up to a heart monitor for a good 20 mins or so while they were prepping the paperwork/test/ and waiting for the doctor to come in and my heart rate was low the whole time before the test started and before i would have passed out...but im sure the beta blocker is to regulate it and is not just to lower it (like i was reading online lol) ...my blood pressure is low sometimes and regular others...ive never had high blood pressure..always low or normal

i would agree that its more then likely to regualte not to lower. and its good that your bp is normal. i would def. talk to your doctor about your concerns. but i hope i was able to ease your mind a little bit and give you some info!

Re: health related question

Sorry, I don't know a lot about your condition, but I know a lot about the drug!

What was your heart rate? Usually beta blockers are prescribed for patients with hypertension to lower their blood pressure. But it's only used if their heart rate is above 55-60 because it works by slowing down your heart. Sometimes if your heart rate is already really low and you take a beta blocker, it'll cause you to pass out (that's why I asked your heart rate).

Also, all that stuff about caffeine and alcohol is geared more towards patients with hypertension, not so much the drug itself. Caffeine and alcohol revs up your heart rate, which increases your blood pressure. So for patients with hypertension, it's advised to stay away from those since they could potentially cancel out the effects of the drug. So if you don't have high blood pressure, you can still enjoy your morning coffee!

my blood pressuere is usually really low, sometimes its reallyyy low that they need to take it like 3 times cause they cant believe how low it is, and sometimes its normal....so i also have the low BP like you. but they might have put you on a low dosage for right now, you can always ask your doc if taking 1 or half is better, to start getting your body adjusted to it.

Wow I've never seen anyone else who has that. My friend has Vasal Vagal and that's immediately what I thought when she mentioned she passes out.

Jenise I was on Beta Blockers for about 3 years, there's absolutely nothing to worry about...they were a life saver for me. I have a fast heart rate and get very bad palpitations so that's why I was prescribed it. I was on Atenolol like 'Mary' and the only side effects I had were that you tend to feel a little colder than normal (which $ucked because I'm freezing all the time) and also until your body gets used to it you get a little sleepy. I have a cardiologist in Woodbury that I swear by, he takes care of me and took care of a few others in my family if you'd like his information. But don't worry you'll be ok

Im glad you were finally able to figure out why you were passing out.

You have nothing to worry about with the beta blockers. Millions of ppl take them every day.
Those side effect warnings ca scare the crap outta you but they have to advise of evrery little thing. Just let your doc know of anything weird and you will be fine!

Re: health related question

My dad is on a beta blocker.. and he hasn't had any side effects from it.. It has regulated his heart rate.. and he doesn't get dizzy or feel faint anymore... it has really helped him completely.... I am sure it will do the same for you.. but definitely call the dr about side effects..

Also I know what it's like to be on WEBMD.. I get myself crazzy with that site!!!

I've had the tilt test done.. it's horrible... I sympathize with you.. although I don't know what's worse... passing out during it.. or surviving the whole thing like I did.. and then feeling like you were going to vomit AFTER!

If you need support... or wanna talk.. fm me! I know what you are going through!

think on the bright side.. they found the cause.. and now it's going to be controlled

Re: health related question

sorry you are going through this & that i don't know much about this. one word of advice (from personal experience) .. don't do any more research on the internet. you will drive yourself crazy. talk to your doctor. ask him/her any questions you may have. thats what they get paid for.

try not to worry.... i know easier said than done..
