Hello and Goodbye Kissers?

Original post by MonkeyLuv

How do you feel about people who kiss you hello and goodbye?

Should there be a certain level of familiarity before this becomes routine?

If you don't like it, how do you avoid it?

If you are a kisser, can you tell if it's welcomed by certain people?

It is a NY thing - I lived out west and people there are huggers in the situations where NYers are kissers.
.

All of a sudden when I came home from my first year of college, all my friends had turned into kissers I was SO not prepared.

I always felt weird when it came to this. I thought I was alone feeling this way! I really don't like be kissed/hugged by EVERYONE, only very close family/friends. I just try to break into conversation quickly, I don't let them get close enough for the hug/kiss.

I find it particularly uncomfortable at work-related events. Just this past weekend I had a BBQ at my house for a bunch of my colleagues. Now, if we were at a morning meeting, none of them would dream of kissing me (or hugging for that fact) - - - so why, when we're in my backyard, is a kiss and hug appropriate?

Holy uncomfortable!

OMG!!! That is so true!!!! I ALWAYS used to ask that!!!

I think it is definently a metro area thing.

When I went to school in Brooklyn each day we walked into school, friends would kiss each other hello and goodbye.

I still do that with my good friends and DH friends..

I like it, shows that you do care and are a true friend to them.

I don't mind the hugs and kisses (actually - Im' a huge fan of the hug...love them! )....but what I hate is when you kiss a creepy uncle hello or goodbye on the cheek and he makes a big deal out of it, like you just made out with him or something.... that grosses me out

My family are huggers (as pointed out that is the norm in the south). I realized when I moved up here that people liked kissing hello and goodbye. For a while at parties, I would just sneak out to avoid that moment. Now, I do kiss my close friends and DH's mom, but others get the hug or the handshake.

i don't 'hello' and 'goodbye' kiss anyone at all. my husband maybe and i don't like it when someone 'hello' and 'goodbye' kiss me. i'm not used to it. the people i know who do do that stuff know not to do it to me. just seems strange to me.

OMG!! I am so glad you brought this up. I totally hate the whole kiss and hug hello and goodbye thing. I never understood the reason for it. I try to avoid it whenever possible. I think with family it is the worst, except for mom and dad, but I don't even like to do it with close friends.

Re: Hello and Goodbye Kissers?

My extended family are hello and goodbye kissers (it takes a while to leave any family gathering!).
If it's just my immediate family, we don't do either since we see each other quite often - except my brother who kisses hello and goodbye for some reason.
For friends, I just follow their lead, but most are hello kissers, some goodbye.
I use a hug when I haven't seem someone in a long time - it's more of a 'Wow, great to see you' versus a 'hello.'

Interesting topic :)

eta: DH's family is SO hard to read - I never know what to do!

Re: Hello and Goodbye Kissers?

I have a lot of friends who kiss hello and goodbye whenever we see each other. I actually find the kiss on the cheek a lot less intimate than a hug. I save the hugs for my closest friends, and more distant people get pecks on the cheek. One of my close guy friends saw me kiss one of DH's friends on the cheek, and was like, 'how come he gets a kiss and I only get a hug?' I explained that hugs are more intimate to me...maybe b/c they involve more full body contact and a kiss on the cheek can just involve the leaning in of the head. Or maybe i'm just weird!

I am not a huge fan..but I tolerate it so people don't think I'm weird.
