Help

I have a big problem. Me and my fiance jjust decided what hall we wanted to have our wedding at and spoke to parents and they agreed to pay for the people they were inviting (family) and give us 10,000 for other things. So my fiance when to talk to his parents about what they would be willing to help out with and they said nothing. They want 54 people to be invited but aren't willing to contribute anything. So I said jsut forget it we won't have a wedding than because I feel that my parents are being taken advantage of. Any ideas on what I should do?!?!

Re: Help

Tell them the fair thing to do is for them to pay for their guests. This way you will have your wedding, and it's on them to pay for and invite their family and friends. I know it's easier said than done, but it's worth a try.

Re: Help

I would give both sets of parents a few 'courtesy' invites and tell that's all you can afford.
If either set up patents wants additional invites, they need them to pay for them.
Since your parents are already paying for them, it will not be a problem for them. It just forces FI's parents to make some decisions.

I aggree. I think if you turn the tables this way, it will persuade them to pay for their guests or not have all 54.

Re: Help

My FI's father isn't paying for anything either, his mother had passed away a few years ago and his dad is remarrying someone else in May, so FI is too scared to ask for anything!!! GRRRR....It makes me mad too that my parents are paying for everything!!

Re: Help

I dunno, I always thought it was appropriate for the couple to foot the bill since it is their wedding. If that is the case then they get full decision on who is invited and who isnt. Since your parents are offering to give money and pay for their guests then their guests should be invited, but it wouldnt be fair if his parents are demanding that certain people be invited and then they dont offer to chip in. If they dont really care if those people arent invited then you cant really expect them to contribute to the wedding.

Re: Help

We are kind of in the same situation...my parents are divorced and my father is not sure he can contribute....we said that's fine if you can't contribute but then we're going to have to limit the amount of people to just family...no friends/coworkers b/c we'd be footing the bill.

I agree. Give his parents like 10 invitations and tell them that is all you can afford.

Re: Help

My FMIL gave us a huge list of people to invite, but haven't discussed $$ yet Luckily, FH doesn't know half of the people on her guest list, so he just said, they aren't being invited - which works for me since I don't want people I don't know at my wedding.
