HELP ... Black Tie?!?!?

Hey girls!
I need your help asap! I just got an invite for a wedding in the city. The attire says Black Tie ... what does that mean for me and the FH???

Black Tie for him ... does that mean tux and bow tie??? What about a nice black suit with a regular tie??? is that ok???

Black tie for me ... Nice cocktail dress??? Does it really have to be floor length??

PS its next month and all I am saying is that its a REALLY NICE and EXPENSIVE place..

TIA!!

I went to a black tie wedding last year and FH went crazy getting a tux and all but other people were in nice suits and he was mad! lol

if it says 'black tie' then he should get a tux and a 'fancy' dress for you.

if it's 'black tie optional' you could get away with a suit & any nice dress.

do you know anyone else attending this wedding? ask them what they're wearing .... or just ask the bride & groom what's appropriate.

good luck

He should wear a tux. If he doesn't have one or doesn't want to rent, he can get away with a black suit, white shirt and black tie too.

For you, either VERY dressy cocktail dress or long dress. I'd pick long dress though.

I think a black suit and nice tie is fine for FH but for you I would say def do a floor length dress

Floor length. Always better to be over-dressed than under, and how often do you get to get really dolled up? Have fun!

Sorry I didn't jump on this. I've been attending to my very busy legal practice.

I think you should definitely go with a floor length gown. If FH has a reeeeaaalllllyyy nice black suit he can pair it with a white shirt and nice tie. I'm probably completely wrong about the suit but sometimes renting a tux isn't an option and I know that depending on where you go the tux may not be as nice as a really good suit.

I like sjr's comment about asking the couple, because it shows you are trying to abide by their leve of formality.

Short of that, if the invitation says black tie, your FH should be in a tux, period. Can you 'get away with' a black suit and tie? Sure, but this isn't some 8th grade dinner dance where a bunch of 13 year olds are trying to get away with wearing a button down, dockers and black sneakers. He will look much better if he just gets a tux.

You can rent one for about $100-150. If you want to buy one at a cheap price, Jos. A Bank has a perfectly good tuxedo, though I would never pay full retail for it. Wait until it goes on sale.

For the tux, have him choose a one-button jacket with either a shawl or peak lapel. The shirt can be wing or laydown collar, but I think the laydown looks a lot better. The bib of the shirt should either be pleated or marcella (textured or pique) front. Make sure to use the shirt studs and cufflinks. Pair all of that with patent leather shoes, a black self-tie bowtie and a black waist covering (either a cummerbund or a low-cut, three-button vest) and he will be all set.

For you, go with either a dressy cocktail dress or evening gown. I don't see a problem with wearing a cocktail dress, so long as it is dressy and event appropriate.

Any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Black tie means he should wear a tux and the women a very fancy dress or long dress. I think it's fun to dress up for a black tie wedding.. why not channel james bond and his hot damsel on his arm.

we have been to 4 black tie weddings. We are also having one. You do not need to rent a tux. There were only a few guys with tuxes. Your fh should wear a dark suit with a dark tie. You can go short or long (i did both). I assure you it didnt make a difference at any of the weddings.

Then they weren't black-tie weddings.

That's ok. Bruce Wayne was independently wealthy, so I guess you can't be quite as prompt.

Ugh you know this black tie stuff makes me nuts. I really think people use it incorrectly. Most couples say black tie so people dont dress casually but people should know a wedding isnt casual.

Ive been to countless 'black tie' affairs and only maybe 2 were actual black tie.

By saying black tie, they want him to wear a tux, but I am sure there will be plenty of people that are not dressed in tuxes. I feel that many people aren't willing to spend the money to rent one. I am sure no one will get too hung up on the fact that your FH isn't wearing one! If he does decide to rent one, however, just deduct the cost from their wedding gift!!!

JK!!! Kind of...
