Re: HELP ... Black Tie?!?!?

I went to a black tie wedding this past Saturday night. I know the bride wanted to put that on the invitations so that people would come dressed 'appropriately.' A lot of the men wore tuxes, mostly family. It was FH's cousin so he rented a tuxedo and I wore a long gown. I'd say family wore tuxes and long gowns and everyone was else was a mix, especially with the what type of the dresses the women wore. I think a dark suit is fine for a guy if it isn't close family, and go with a long dress. I agree I think people use the term in the wrong way, but it's still polite to respect the bride and groom's wishes.

we have been to 4 black tie weddings. We are also having one. You do not need to rent a tux. There were only a few guys with tuxes. Your fh should wear a dark suit with a dark tie. You can go short or long (i did both). I assure you it didnt make a difference at any of the weddings.

Then they weren't black-tie weddings.

Ugh you know this black tie stuff makes me nuts. I really think people use it incorrectly. Most couples say black tie so people dont dress casually but people should know a wedding isnt casual.

Ive been to countless 'black tie' affairs and only maybe 2 were actual black tie.

Yup. I'm not worried about the NY people... but weddings vary a whole lot depending on where in the country you are. I'm slightly worried about what the OOT'ers (coincidentally mostly FH's family...) will wear for a Sunday afternoon wedding.

Oh its an afternoon wedding? So not black tie! Lol

My wedding was black tie invited which I basically did to ensure that my guests from PA, New England and south NJ actually dressed up. You would be surprised how they show up to weddings.

But my NY guests all wore tuxes and long dresses. Everyone looked so nice.

I agree, a lot people put it on there so people don't show up looking like a hot mess. We thought about putting it on our invitations because any wedding we've been too for FH's out of town people were dresses much more casusually and I really would prefer it if people didn't show up to my wedding in khakis and a polo.

Hey girls!
I need your help asap! I just got an invite for a wedding in the city. The attire says Black Tie ... what does that mean for me and the FH???

Black Tie for him ... does that mean tux and bow tie??? What about a nice black suit with a regular tie??? is that ok???

Black tie for me ... Nice cocktail dress??? Does it really have to be floor length??

PS its next month and all I am saying is that its a REALLY NICE and EXPENSIVE place..

TIA!!

he can wear a nice black suit and you can wear a dress up to your knees. I aam having a black tie wedding but i dont expect everyone to wear tuxs or long dresses. Just want people to be dressed classy and nice :)

I'd say Tux and gown. if its a really expensive place, you should follow the typical black tie attire.

Re: HELP ... Black Tie?!?!?

My wedding is Black Tie, not just to ensure people know to dress up, but because we are having a very, very formal affair.

Do I wish all guests would wear tuxes? Of course. But will I be annoyed if someone comes in a black suit? No, and in fact I doubt I'll even notice. Now, if someone shoes up in a light color suit, or no suit at all, THAT will be different.

In the summer, I think women can get away with short dresses, but they should be a fancy material.
