Last night my FFIL wasn't feeling well, he had bad chest pains and was vomiting. M FMIL took him to the hospital and they ran tests. He needed 100% oxygen as he wasn't getting enough. They wanted to keep him there overnight and now they say he'll be in there for the rest of the week. So far they have ruled out any heart problems and are thinking it could be a blood clot in his lungs. They will be doing tests for this today.
Has anyone you know gone through the same symptoms and do you know how serious a blood clot in the lungs is? What do they do for this? I am very worried and can't think of anything else right now.
Thank you for listening! Kelly

Re: Help! FFIL admitted to hospital last night !!
a blot clot in the lungs (pulmonary embolism) can be very serious, but it sounds like he got to the hospital quickly and they are doing the right things. A blot clot comes from somewhere else, either your heart if you have an irregular heart rate sometimes, or from say your legs, if you were on a recent trip and sitting a lot, or some people just get them out of nowhere. A piece of the clot breaks off and gets lodged in a smaller vessel, usually the lungs or brain (brain would be a stroke). the treatment is usually 100% oxygen like they gave him, and then blood thinners (usually heparin) to keep the clot from getting bigger. They will do tests to see where the clot came from so that they can prevent it from happening again, and he will probably be put on an oral blood thinner (coumadin) after he leaves the hospital. It's good he didn't have a heart attack, I'm sure he will be okay, I'll keep him in my prayers. what hospital is he in?

thanks jennbaby and jpsgirl!
The both of you have made meed feel more at ease.
JPSGIRL- He is in Hunting Hospital. I am still waiting to hear from my FH as to how he's doing. I want to go there too, but I don't think it would be a good idea since I am sick (very). Thank you for the info. on what might be wrong. It sounds like that could be it. I'm glad to hear that blood thinners may be given and not surgery.
Again, thanks ladies! I'll keep you all posted!

I'm so sorry to hear that Kelly4, he is in all of our prayers. Jpsgrl is right, a pulmonary embolism can be serious but I am sure he has had his blood thinned from the point of danger. jps, what do you do for a living?

Kelly- I'm so sorry to hear that about A's dad!! Please know I'm thinking of both of you right now!! I will talk to Chris about it as well and let you know what he says (he's a PA). If you need to talk, vent or ANYTHING, please let me know...Ugh - I don't have your phone number and I wish I did right now. Here is my email if you guys need ANYTHING... [email protected]
I'll be saying many, many prayers...I'll stop by your classroom tomorrow if I don't hear from you tonight...
My father had flabotis(sp??) a blood clot in his leg...as people have said...it can be serious...my dads doctor didn't pick it up and it took him a week to get to the hospital, but I think once in the hospital things are under control with blood thinners (like cumindin (sp??))
My father was treated at Huntington Hospital...and very well...he is fine now...just needs to wear a 'stocking' on his leg and takes blood thinners everyday for the rest of his life...
I will hope for the best
