I bought a house in May 2007. The whole process from the time we started looking took about 5 months. We found what we were looking for fairly quick.

I bought a co-op earlier this year...I started looking in October 2007 and closed May 2008!!

However it took me a while to find one I wanted. From offer to closing was about 2.5 months.

Maybe aim for a few months before the wedding...even if you're not going to live there right away you'll want time to paint, clean, buy furniture, etc. That way once you're married you'll be all ready to move in!!

I guess it never hurts to see what's out there--just be prepared if you fall in love with something right away!! Will you be in a position to buy??

Also, and I might totally be making this up, but I think houses are slightly more expensive in the summer.

My process was super quick. We closed on the house within 1 1/2 months of deciding to buy the house.

I also heard that summer is more expensive...but i think that is when it's a good market...i'm noticing prices just keep going down and down.

Our process is going fairly quickly, FH had been looking at houses-as i made that his jobs, but his fathers friend told him about the house he is selling before he put it on the market so FH took me to see it. Its a great deal, eventhough it needs work.

We put the offer in the end of August, it was accepted, then we were approved for a mortgage, recently we met with our lawyer to go over the contract and we are set to go for the closing on December 1st.

we plan on looking 6 months before we get married. We aren't going to live together until we get married and if worse comes to worse we can live in his apt til we find something

home ownership sounds amazing but fh and i plan to buy a co op first, save more money, and then use that money plus the money we'll get when we sell the co op back to the board as our down payment on a home. i definitely take my hat off to the brides that are buying a house and planning a wedding at the same time!

me and FH agree that me might never want a house and we are probably only going to have one kid (hopefully a son ) so we will be getting a co-op, maybe a condo if we can find a cheap one.

But I think it is great that all of you ladies can buy a house!!

Re: Help!!!! homeowners/future homeowners

my idea was to move into an apartment first because i know that this wedding planning is expensive. I am thankful that my parents and his parents are paying for the hall my mother for my dress...FH and I will be paying vendors. FH doesn't like the idea of renting (he's an accountant) he thinks is a waste of money so this is why he wants to buy a house. I am excited but kind of scared too. I know we will be financially ok once we get married but with this economy you never know.

We're looking to buy a two bedroom condo...we may upgrade to a house later, and we're going to start looking next summer.

FH agrees and says we have to buy something that renting is just throwing money away. You can't worry about the economy - it is what it is and if you can afford it now you should be ok

Fh and I are in contract for a condo. If everything goes right we will be closing within the month. Honestly, we looked for a few weeks at some condos, found one we loved and was priced right, put the offer in, it was accepted!! We couldn't of asked for an easier process. My dad is a realtor and can spend months showing people houses. So if you know what and where you want and stick to your budget it should only take a few months. Like others have said I would start at least 6 mths before the wedding.

Re: Help!!!! homeowners/future homeowners

it depends on the home. Right now FH & I have an offer on a home that is considered a short sale. We haven't heard anything for a month. They say short sales take at least 6 months. However, other homes could close in 30days. My aunt just bought a house and closed in 2 weeks. So it truley depends on the home situation.

Also, I would give yourself at least 6 months to find something. FH & I have been looking since May and this was the first house we liked.

09er crashing - i think you cant really timeline this process because you may not find the home you love & want to buy right away.

Me & Fh have 2 homes & besides having to actually find the home then there is the bank & the closing etc. It can be almost 6 months depending upon the swiftness of finding the perfect home.

GOOD LUCK!
