We want to come up with a plan to redo our kitchen and bathroom downstairs, but need someone to tell us what we can and can't do with our existing space. I guess we need to have someone come over to evaluate? But who is that 'someone'? A contractor? And can anyone recommend????
I'm clueless!

you can have a contractor.. or simply get someone like from Home Depot to come and see the space..a contractor will do the same.. they will take measurements and draw plans and do stuff on the computer..

The contractor tends to do the work...but if you want to redesign the space a lot, you probably want to hire a designer. If you already have a contractor, they probably have referals.
A few of the contractors I interviewd suggested I hire one but I knew I couldnt rearrange the area much so there was no point...but if you have a lot of ideas for changes, a designer will get that all together for you.

dietzer,
i work for the contractor that does all of the kitchen and bath renovations for the home depot. What usually happens if you go into depot and tell them what you want and they send a measuring service out they also sit you down with one of there designers and make you a computer drawing called a 20/20. You pick out what you want according to the 20/20 and they give you a price. if you interested in having a Home Depot installer do it thats where my company would come to your home and give you a price. If you decide to go with us we would come out again and make sure the home dept drawing works and make a final layout which the contractor will work off of. When the products are in to you from depot we would begin work usually within a couple of weeks. Alot of people go with Home Depot because they are such a big company and you know that they will be in business for a long time.

Cabinet sellers (like Home Depot or others) will help you design the kitchen based on the cabinet placement. That is a pretty big piece but they are no help when it comes to other areas like style, appliances, backsplash, windows, plumbing, electical etc.. We went to Home Depot first (after spending the $100 for the design) to realize they would be no use to us b/c we wanted to get new windows, door, floor, radiators, plumbing and electrical.
