A charity!

FH and I are donating $$ to a charity instead of giving traditional favors

Here are our final choices

1. Alzheimers - my grandmother and grandfather both have it, his grandfather had it

2. March of Dimes - Since we have Emma and I couldnt imagine someone living with a child with a birth defect. (To those who do my hat is off to you)

3. AIDS Research - FH's uncle has it from a blood transfusion in the 80's

4. Hemophilia - FH's uncles both have it

5. American Red Cross - covers a lot

I would vote for Alzheimers. It would be more personal for u. On a personal note for me, I don't think enough attention has been paid to this disease. My grandmother also suffers from this disease.

alzheimers is a TERRIBLE disease.

I went to see my grandfather in FL Jan 9th for the first time Since 9/10/01 and I didnt expect him to know who I was... he recognized me. It was SOOO hard!

I agree that not enough attention is paid to Alzheimers Disease. My grandmother suffers with it and is in the later stages. I often think that people who haven't dealt with it don't realize how bad it gets. It seems to always be associated with memory loss but it gets much worse than that. Ok, down from my soap box now. I obviously voted for Alzheimers. I think it's a great cause and it has touched you personally. Regardless, all of those charities deserve attention. You can't go wrong.

I voted None.

I give to charity all the time.. in Xmas Im nearly exhausted with the work i do.. and all of those charities are worth it.. I'd add Cancer Society as well.

So why did I vote no?
I don’t like Charities as a favor at all. For the same reason I had the pastor take the words “by God’s Grace” out of the part where audience has to respond. I don’t like pressuring people. I thought about how I’d feel if I sat down and saw a note that said “Hi, instead of a favor we gave in your name to XXX” I personally feel favors are a little over played to begin with perhaps cause I’m not a native long islander. Still if I got that ‘note’ I’d feel like “Geez.. I really don’t like that charity” (I loath the Salvation Army) or “Uhm, gee.. thanks.. I guess for thinking of other people for me” (guilt ridden that I’m enjoying your wedding when I could have given to a charity instead).

I don’t know it just feels wrong. I guess it’s ok if you alright with receiving a card saying “Instead of givin you a gift, we gave in your name to XXX charity”.

I guess I’d be alright (as a guest) if there was some big sign that says “Dear Friends and Family, in lieu of favors the Bride & Groom have given to the XXX charity as gift from their union” or some such thing. I guess I’d think “Wow, they had money to burn and gave to a charity instead of spending money on something I wouldn’t use.. what a great idea.”

Sorry no offense to anyone..just my opinion.

ETA: my charities of choice are Cancer Society and Battered Women's Shelters.. where those women thought happily ever after really meant happy.
