HELP ME CHOOSE AND EXTERIOR COLOR!!!

I cant choose. I have colonial style. Sorry should have specified. We have cedar. Right now its PALE mint green (I think its white but everyone else tells me its green). We just added another room and thats cedar brown.

Can you post a photo of yoru house? What color is the trim and the doors, etc?

what colors are your immediate neighbor's houses? I always think some variety is better than identical houses, although colors that compliment each other is important too!

To the right is brown cedar, the left is brick, white, white and grey, across the street is tan, white, yellow

Karen - do you have painted WOOD cedar shakes, or is it the vinyl faux cedar shakes? I ask b/c we are hoping to paint our house in the spring, and we have real cedar shakes.

I have a thing about painting over wood. I love wood so I wouldnt paint it a color. Maybe you can stain it a different shade?

Stef - I agree, but we have no other choice, really....I am not working, so we will not be re-siding the house until I go back to work someday.

Our house was previously inhabited by two elderly people that...a) couldn't do any work themselves, and b) were much too cheap and too in debt to pay anyone to properly care for their home.

So, the cedar shakes on my house are deteriorating and are this soot black color b/c they were never properly sealed after they were put up. The weather alone has beaten them to a pulp - not to mention the insects who feed off of the wood (yellow jackets and wasps use wood embers to build their nests, buy I digress).

We are looking into a line of products by Cabot that are solid color wood stains. Basically, they are stains, but the color does not allow the grain of the wood to show through as much. We like this idea, b/c we are hoping that it will hide many of the imperfections of the wood in its current state.
We used one of the colors - a pretty red - on our deck, and it came out great. It really gives the deck a new life, without a huge cost to us right now.

Claud-The Cabot stain you're talking about is a great product. I have seen it used over cedar many times(by homeowners) & it really works great-I know you had success on your decking & it will work well on your cedar shingles as well. In most cases people powerwash the shingles first to remove anything that would prevent it from sticking properly.

Thanks Kelly for the feedback regarding the Cabot stains. We did have great success with the deck, but I do appreciate hearing your comments on painting the cedar shingles themselves!

If you don't mind, I have a question for you regarding the powerwashing....my hubby is planning to tackle this part of the task himself, but he is a bit concerned about the powerwashing possibly splintering or splitting the shingles b/c they are soft and deteriorated. Do you think that powerwashing would be okay on the lowest setting possible?

I love the look of 'pale yellow and burgandy shutters' Thats my suggestion to you. Best of luck! ps everyone has 'slate blue', including me...I hate it!

We have slate blue vinyl siding we have a contempt victorian. If you want to see how the color looks let me know and I will post a pic, but I love the way the slate blue looks.
