I would prefer the apt complex because of privacy but V, I know you and Luis are saving for a house so if you save a lot of money in a basement or attic, maybe it's worth it to rough it a couple of years and keep saving to buy a house KWIM?
OKay, also, my paranoid self coming through but I'd prefer attic over a basement because what if there was a fire? Make sure you can get out of the windows!
sorry, i'm super paranoid about these things!

I lived in a bsement apartment for 4 years and it was FANTASTIC!!! It had its downsides (no laundry) and yea, i heard a lot of walking around (since my landlord had 5 kids) but they were fantastic. However, you could get a cr@ppy landlord and that could make life miserable for ya.
DH and I live in a building now and it's great! It feels more like our home then my just taking up space in someone elses home.
BUT the cost of living in that basement was A LOT cheaper then what we pay now. Everything was included in the basement apartment so there were no worries.
I think it counts on your budget and what you are most comfortable with.

def an apt building! too many stories of basement leaks etc yes you can get more (some come with backyards, cable included etc) but you dont know what heat & hotwater will be like and you dont know if anything goes wrong how long it will take to fix. plus you never know whose house you are moving in to...they could have kids that are noisy and run around etc
basement leaks is a very good point too!! omg, ours used to flood in our old house and many people get water in their basements when there is heavy, heavy rain

I have had 3 apartments all in houses and prefer it that way. I have been lucky and always had great landlords, our current one is coming to the wedding! The rent is usually lower in a house and most of the time comes with utilities, also you don't have to worry about neighbors a much. We are moving out of our basement apt in about a month if your interested in eastern Suffolk!

I vote complex. It is nice to call an actual management company to fix things vs. just the home owner

i've lived in all three.
living in the top level of a home, it was always a pain in the a$$ lugging everything up two flights of stairs. It was always super hot, and if I didn't get my shower or dishes done before the homeowners used the water, i'd either have very hot water, or very cold water.
I lived with DH in a basement apartment for a month- i'll never ever do that again. It was dark, damp and very depressing. Plus we heard (and felt) every step from the people above us, and because the walls and ceiling were so thin, we'd hear every conversation.
we live in a complex now, and I LOVE it here. It's very homey, and private. Definetly worth the extra money every month- it feels like a condo

basement i would not choose.
i always wanted to be in an apt building, but it was too pricey for us
we got a 2nd floor house right in our price range and we absolutely love it!

OMG so many things!!! I have NO idea what we going to choose... we will start next week i think to check BOTH of them....
The only reason why I dont want the bsmt or 2nd floor is because I AREADY LIVE IN BOTH OF THEM!!!!! BUT apt is a lil more $ for us too but i thk we can afford it too

Oh and I forgot this- houses can be SOLD- TWO of my landlords in East Meadow sold the house- the first time I was sold with the house and when the new landlords sold- I had to move out.
This was hell because I had strangers coming in and out of my apartment ALL the time for two sets of house sales.
Apartments in complexes or buildings are FAR more stable.

Re: Help me decided: Basemant/Attic or Apt Complex Bulding?
this is a tough one. DH & I were looking at apts. before the wedding. most of them were in apt. buildings and were nice and not overly above our budget (we were looking to keep it around or under $1500) however, right before our wedding, his sister moved out of the 2cd floor of his parents home and his parents offered it to us before the rented it out to someone else. the rent is under $1000 and will help us save for our own home that much faster. plus, there is a HUGE pro of being able to do my own laundry, and the apt. itself is huge with 3 bedrooms, living and dining room. HOWEVER, although my IL's are nice people, they are constantly underfoot which i dont' care for and DH is getting much better at keeping them at bay. obvi, this is a house and not an apt. building and it feels much more homey to me, but i can see how nice it would be to have your own apt. in a building where the privacy thing is a big factor.
Although i must say, i don't know if the basements out in LI are different than the ones i have lived in in Queens, but the ones i lived in were actualy apts. with windows and were huge...not rinky dink dark places with no windows where you were scared a troll would crawl out of the woodwork
before you deice which way you want to go, visit some apts and see what you like and what is within your budget.

Well based on what we have think n to save more $ towards our house we think we can afford something with $1200.... But I am so unsure of all of this!!!!!!!
