I prefer apartment in a building, always have. I get claustrophobic in homes, especially in basements (but that's just a personal choice). Same feeling for an attic.
If I were to choose between the two, I'd def choose apartment. I love the convenience of one, and not having to deal directly w/ a landlord.

Go with a building, not a basement.
I lived in a basement for 4 years in college and it was the worst experience ever. the people above me had kids who rollerbladed and pounded on the floor constantly, and made me go crazy.
Also, it was hard to get my mail and deliveries.

Well I've lived in both.
Living in a building - gives you more freedom. You're not actually IN your landlords HOUSE- *and godforbid they live under or above you* You can't paint the walls- have animals and they are always right on TOP of you.
They see and pay attention to what you're doing, when you're coming and going and getting problems fixed can take more time as they have to call someone to come in.
Also there are things like shower water getting super hot or COLD when they flush.
I would def. say if you can- get a complex or a building.
These places expect you to paint- are way less in your business because there are so many renters to worry about and have maintence on staff waiting for you to have a problem.
Good Luck!

I live in an apartment in a house and LOVE it! I am not in a basement though. Mine is a ground level apartment.
The biggest pro to living in a house is that sometimes the rent includes all. My rent includes heat, water, AC, electric, and cable. I dont have to pay anything! In a building you are going to pay for all of that separate, so sometimes it works out to be more money.
Check out Craigs List for apartments.

I would just start looking and seeing what you can get for your budget. I also have a fear of living on a lower floor, so I've always lived in a building because I need to be higher (I'm afraid someone will come through window and kill me lol...I have issues).

Right now i'm in a house too- but my landlord lives in queens- and our house is in Brooklyn. Home owners are way more possesive about what you do- show up unannounced and are on your case more.
Yes usually you get more for your money- (although not in our case- we only took it cause it has a huge backyard for our dogs!)

If you find a real nice one in basement or in someones house that would be super, but I think you will like the privacy better in an apt building or complex. JMO!

def apartment. unless you get one of those 2 family homes where it's split vertically and you're not stuck to just the basement of attic. but the thought of having the landlord there would bother me, unless it's 100% rental home and the other half was a tenant as well. i would look at both and not just narrow it down to the complex or basement/attic housing yet IMO

It depends on what you like. When we started looking, we looked at ones in people's homes only because apartment complexes were out of our budget. We didn't want a basement apartment and weren't too thrilled with 2nd floor apartments. We ended up in a main floor apartment in a house. The guy basically converted his two car garage into an apartment.
Our rent includes everything but internet, plus we can use the bbq and patio.
Check out craigslist and just start actually looking. That will definitely help you guys figure out what you do and don't like. HTH

Also...
make sure if you rent an apt in a house...that the house is not going in foreclosure and next thing you know everyone is been evicted from the house,.

Re: Help me decided: Basemant/Attic or Apt Complex Bulding?
def an apt building! too many stories of basement leaks etc yes you can get more (some come with backyards, cable included etc) but you dont know what heat & hotwater will be like and you dont know if anything goes wrong how long it will take to fix. plus you never know whose house you are moving in to...they could have kids that are noisy and run around etc
