Re: Help me make up my mind!!!!!!!!

Con for a ballgown:
it is very very heavy. heavier than an a-line.

Pro for a ballgown:
it's very princess like

Pro for an a-line:
They come in many more designs than ballgowns therefore you can more originality.

Con for an a-line:
I can't really think of any.

You don't look like you need a dress to make you look thinner. I got an A-line because it made me look better.

Did you try on both? Take pics then we can decide easier

I love the way aline looks. I think it compliments almost any body type.

I prefer ballgowns -- very princess-like. But, it all comes down to what you think looks better on you.

Re: Help me make up my mind!!!!!!!!

hmmm... in my opinion =)

Ballgown PRO:
it's the fairy tale bridal gown.
you'll look like a princess.
there's a bigger variety of ballgown dresses out there.

Ballgown CON:
the dress being so big it's overwhelming.
it's very heavy.
it gets hot underneath.
gets in the way. (like a destruction on its path)
sitting down may cause a problem.
dancing w your partner may be strategic.

*the ballgown opinion derives from a friend who wore a ballgown for her event which took place in september of 2003.

A-LINE PRO:
makes a person look thinner.
some a-line dresses may offer a sexy look.
might be able to wear again.
low or no maintenance.

but with all that said, i'm just not attracted to ballgowns for myself. i do think ballgowns are beautiful but i'm more attracted to an a-line wedding dress.

i understand that policy but you know what i did for my friend as she was trying on dresses..? i went inside the dressing room with her and sneaked some pix. or if the dresssing room is one huge room with ppl coming in and out i would somehow sneak one. w/o the flash, of course.

Re: Help me make up my mind!!!!!!!!

It all depends what kind of gowns catch your eye and what looks better on you.

A-line gowns have a more understated, elegant look to them, IMO.

Ballgowns are the quintessential fairytale princess style.

You feel different in each type of gown, and if you ask me, it's all about how the gown makes YOU feel.

That said, for me it was BALLGOWN all the way!! I love ballgowns and I wasn't hot or uncomfortable in mine at all. Sitting and dancing were no problem either, but that might depend on the type of gown, fabric, crinoline/hoopskirt.

I was saying that samething. What i did is try both on and see which on i liked i liked the a-line one.

Ballgown. Because when will you ever get to wear one again?

Re: Help me make up my mind!!!!!!!!

Keep in mind it also depends upon your body type and height.

A friend of mine had her heart set on a ballgown of tulle but she was 4' 11' and very curvy. When she came out to look in the mirror she said 'Oh my God, I'm as wide as I am tall'. Hate to say it but she was.

My other friend is 5' 11' and is very thin she could wear anything. Her ballgown looked great.

I tried on both and got an A-line. Every ballgown was just too much dress for me, personally. I think if I got married in my 20's I'd have wanted one.

Some girls can carry it off better than others.

I always thought I wanted ballgown but when I tried them on...as beautiful as they were I couldn't move in them...they are so HEAVY...

A-line wasn't what I was looking for but they were definately more comfortable and just as beautiful...

I'm still undecided as well bc I've always wanted the ballgown type...I'm looking for a compromise

Hi Nicole,

Wish I could be of more help, but am going through the exact same problem now, which is why I ran a serach and stumbled across your post, LOL!!!! I keep changing my mind but am leaning a little more towards A-line. I just feel more 'me' than when I'm in a ballgown. Let me know what you decide

Re: Help me make up my mind!!!!!!!!

They are both beautiful. It depends on how they make you feel. When I was trying on dresses I tried on quite a few ballgowns, and my mother said I looked like a princess. However, there was one dress that I kept going back to, that had all the tulle of a ballgown, without the girth, and that was what I went with.

In the current issue of Modern Bride there is a dress very similar to the one I ordered - a cross between a ballgown and an A-line. Unfortunately, it is sitting on my desk at work so I can't tell you what page or even the name of the designer.

I'll check tomorrow and get back to you.

Re: Help me make up my mind!!!!!!!!

I was torn on both as well when I went looking. I fell in love with an A-Line dress, and because of this my parents thought it looked like a cocktail dress instead of a wedding gown.

I was also able to carry off a ballgown as long as it wasn't poofy.

There is a happy medium.....getting a ballgown dress that does not have tulle in it, maybe made of organza or a lighter fabric than satin, and then trying on an A-line crinoline underneath. This is what they did for me at my salon, and although I think I need mine fuller, it would be a happy medium if you can't decide.
