I went dress shopping yesterday and tried on a dress I really liked. My FMIL asked them who made it and they wouldn't tell her. IS THAT LEGAL? I really want to view it online and can't find it!

Re: Help Needed - IS this legal?
I think it's safe to say there's not a law on the books about it but it's not ethical, that's for sure. It would definitely make me think twice about using the store you were in.
Next time check out the tag, etc - you can usually find skew numbers, etc - you should put the info into your cell phone (so it's not as obvious as writing it down) so you can look it up online, etc. (did this for my friend when she was looking)

I'm not sure weather or not it's legal but they don't want you to find/buy it someplace else
they want the sale and would do anything to get it (including illegal things - if this is one of them)
shame on them

I don't think not telling you is illegal but, ripping the tags out of the dress is completely illegal. I would check the tag and then go look for it.

I'm sure someone else will tell you more specifically, but I'm pretty sure they CANNOT do that. And I'm pretty sure there is some legal backing to that. I agree with eogara, I would think twice about dealing with that salon.

Re: Help Needed - IS this legal?
It is not illegal to refuse to tell you who the dress was made by, however Kathy is right that it is illegal to rip the tags out of the dress. But, either way the tag might not represent the real designer. Sounds like this place is up to something fishy. Im in my last year of law school and very interested in International Human Rights, the dress might not represent the real designer because it might have been made at a sweatshop (where they have tags of every designer that you could think of and all they have to do is sew it in). I definately would not shop there, maybe if you describe the dress we can help you find it.

Re: Help Needed - IS this legal?
The dress needs to be identified in some way. they dont need to tell you the name. They dont need to have the tag with the name on it - they do need to have at least the manufacturers code on the dress though.l

Re: Help Needed - IS this legal?
They can definitely refuse to tell you the designer. I am an attorney and I don't know about ripping out tags. Either way a legal battle would not help you acheive your goal- to find out the designed of the dress- at least not for a few years. But I would recommend a few things:
1. Do an advanced search on the knot and put in as much info as you can to identify your dress.
2 you can also find out the brands the store carries, usually if they have a webpage you can find this out.
3. You can go to other stores and try to find this dress again. Then you can learn who makes the dress. I know Kleinfelds and I think Bridal Refelctions keeps the tags on.
Good luck to you!

Re: Help Needed - IS this legal?
They tried that at the store where i found my dress. I nicely told them as much as I like dress-I am uncomfortable with thier sales practices. I need to know what I'm paying for, what material it is made of and that I'm paying a fair price.
I asked the saleswoman to think honestly about that fact that she wants me to spend money blindly and not know what I'm paying for??? I thanked her for her time and started to get dressed. She told me the designer and model number.
I confirmed by going to other stores and checking the designers website and made them put the details my receipt when I finally decided to order.
I know they hate comparison and internet shopping but thats not my problem.

Keep looking. other stores will carry the dress and chances are it will be cheaper. If this store had the best prices - they'd WANT you to comparison shop!!!
