Help, por favor: 15 minute (?!!) demo lesson for 6th grade math....?

Original post by beachbum05

I dont know WHAT THE HELLLLLLLLLLLLL I can teach in 15 minutes...but does anyone have an idea? I just got a phone call to do a lesson TOMORROW.

Or maybe can a teacher out there explain to me what I am supposed to display (general skills) within such a short time?!

no real info either but maybe you can teach them the different measurement systems, like grams and pounds using crack cocaine and marijuana. Good luck Bon! You're going to rock it!

Wellllllllll......it WOULDDDDDDDD be the right area/school district to teach it to....lemme tell ya.

You are so freaking close (and hi!). Can't wait to see your pink-fiesta-de-love.

The ladies have provided outstanding ideas! Whichever you choose, be sure to appeal all learning styles (auditory, visual, kinestetic).

Also, be prepared to submit a written plan on the spot.

You were called back because you have what they are looking for!

Keep all students engaged also!

Go get em'

Good Luck Bonnie!

Sorry no advise I am not a teacher -- if you want to teach the kids how to balance out my last budget for work I will be happy to give you the supplies (400 page hotel bill enough?)

I like the fraction ideas.

When I did my demo last year for my job, I brought a small wipe board just in case there wasn't any chalk or a board. Just a thought to bring one with you just in case.

Good luck!!!

ooh! What if I give the kids M&Ms? Have them divide them up, and then write each color as a fraction, percent, and decimal?

Mmmm candy/bribery

I did this with the candy hearts around Valentine's Day for our 100 Day Project in 4th grade 2 yrs in a row. Kids LOVED it, great lesson, worked out beautifully. I'd say use the M&Ms or Skittles b/c they're readily available now. Make it into group work (in math, they love to see group and individual work), give each group 100 m&ms and follow what you wrote above about dividing them into colors.

I made up a chart on MS Word or excel that had the colors listed on 1 side, and the columns said 'FRACTION' 'DECIMAL' 'PERCENT'. The kids divided up the m&ms, had to write # out of 100, show it as a fraction first, since they can visualize that as the easiest out of the 3, then they convert to a decimal, and then to percent. For an actual lesson, have some fresh m&ms on hand for after the lesson, so they don't eat their manipulatives after they've all had their hands all over them.

GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!

ETA: I'm sorry, I just reread your original post and noticed you posted it yesterday..... how did your demo go? Which lesson did you choose? Hope all went well!!!!!!!
