OK...First, take a deep breath...ahh. thats better :o) I was just as anxious as you. I am too the first of my friends to be engaged. It is all very exciting but can be overwhelming. This site is SUPER helpful. Any questions you have, (wedding related or not) we are all here to help you. I have had so many random thoughts that I just throw out there for advice and always get a great answer. I have learned so much and it has only been 4 months! My advice to you is take your time. Everyone stresses booking things super fast. It is important to reserve your hall and ceremony site first. Make this your top priority. After that, decide upon what you want to tackle next. Remember, some people pull off weddings in 6 months. If you leave yourself a year or so, you will do just fine. Don't forget to enjoy this experience... attend bridal shows, get your gf's involved and have fun!
ITA. You have plenty of time. Find the RH that is perfect for you, and the church (if applicable), then the music (band/dj). That's all I've done so far. Oh and I have my dress ordered but those three things should be your focus first. My wedding is in June which is THE wedding month and I've only booked those three but I feel totally fine. I'll focus next on florist and photog/videog, then limos, then the other stuff. And if you want to throw in an E Party that's fun, too. But I agree with working on one or two things at a time, not more than that. Happy planning!!! This should be an enjoyable experience for you, not a headache!!!

Re: HELP! Recently engaged
Welcome to your new addiction!
Its all about baby steps... this site is a great reference. First come up with a realistic budget and a guest list. Decide if you prefer a place that hosts one wedding at a time or not. It doesn't matter to some people. Then come up with what you want your venue to have and deal breakers. Then visit some of the venues to see if they live up to your expectations and if their pricing is within your budget.
Most places these days set you up with a coordinator to help guide you with vendors and such. You can also use this board for reference. You will seriously get the good, bad and ugly from REAL people, which is great. You will be well informed before meeting with the other vendors.
Use the search option when you need info on anything. Also use Chat lingo (5th option in white on the green bar) if you don't understand some of the chats.

Congrats!!!
First think i would do is make a tentative guest list so when you go looking at halls you can give them a # of people for a more accurate price.
Also, think about what you are looking for in a hall. And ask, i think between everyone on here we have been to every place on LI and most in westchester too
