HELP! Sister-In-Law Causing MAJOR Upset

Hello Brides and Friends,

I have a very rough situation on my hands. The day after my fiance' and I got engaged, we personally drove to his brothers' homes and asked his brothers' children to be part of our wedding party. It was that day that my beloved sister in law (mother of one of my flower girls) said to me, 'My daughter will be in white, right?' At the time, I must have said yes, but really had NO idea what type of wedding attire I would chose since we had literally just became engaged.

A few months later, at a family party my siser-in-law was thumbing through a dress catalog. She turned to my fiances' older nieces and told them, 'This is the dress I am thinking about getting for *****'. I asked 2 times before she showed ME what she was looking at which was a white dress. So, me being the kind hearted person I am thought nothing of it.

Time past, and I went to the dress store. There I found out that my bridesmaid's dress came in MINI! Alfred Angelo Style #6493MM. I was sold! I immediately e-mailed my sister-in-law (my fiance's brothers wife, please observe this fact) about how happy I was that I found the dress. Here was her response:

'I think having ***** match the bridal party and not the bride is not a good idea. In every wedding party through the centuries flower girls match the bride. I will however, still see the dress you have in mind.'

We spoke on the phone soon after that, and she proceeded to tell me how the dress I chose was too long, too dark (my color is wine) and too mature for her little girl who is 3. She also said that it's one thing to tell the adult girls what to get as bridesmaids, but it's another thing to tell the flower girls what to get. I don't agree with her AT ALL, however to not make an issue I said,
'Ok, well if you are that opposed to this dress, although I am not happy, I will replace *****'s dress with something else, and the other little flower girls I have will wear what I haven chosen already.'

Apparently my sister-in-law did not hear me correctly, or heard what she wanted. She responded in a loud mean voice, 'WHAT???? Is that nice to say to me???This conversation is over!!!!' And she hung up.

So much for that...

The next day she proceeded to tell my 75 year old mother-in-law and 80 year old father-in-law that I KICKED her little girl out of my wedding party!!!

I was not a happy camper.

She also told my fiance in a loud Linda Blair like voice, 'I want to hear you say that you don't want your OWN BLOOD in your wedding party because your obstinate future wife won't compromise.'

I was even more so-not a happy camper.

I feel that my SIL is using her baby daughter as a wedge between her and I and my fiance'. His brother, nor her have not spoken a word to us since this all happened..and that was last October.

Sadly, since then my father-in-law has passed away. This was tragic for all of us and our hearts are broken, Despite his death, they still won't speak with us.

My dilemma is this..my mother-in-law is begging me to change this dress to suit her depute her rude comments. I am lost here..I so miss my what would have been future baby niece.

Any opinions would help.

Thanks!
The Upset Bride

when it comes down to it, its doesnt really matter what the flowergirl wears--- i am someone that is all about letting the little things slide, it seems like a power struggle that has gone too far. You need to deside if the fower girl dress is somthing you can let go and if u can, i would bc it will ease tension..hope that helps! dealing with families are tough!

I think its your wedding and you should decide on what everyone wears...she should not have assumed she could pick the dress out --- I've never heard of that before --- but for the sake of family I'd call a truce and tell her she can wear whatever she wants. it won't be an easy conversation, but i'd hate to start off my marriage not talking to any of my in-laws.

Based on what you've said, it sounds like you're completely on the right side here and your SIL is being controlling and vindictive. Nobody (besides her) would fault you if you stick with the dress you want.

BUT. If giving in and letting her daughter wear the dress she wants helps to heal the rift and lets you see your niece, I think it's absolutely worth the compromise. Yes, SIL's behavior is awful. If this was some big, important issue, I'd tell you to hold your ground. But, in the big picture, who really cares what the flower girls wear? Especially at the cost of kids and relationships?

I agree with this....although it is YOUR day, for the sake of family it might be worth it to just let this one go...

BTW, what does FH think about all of this?

I wouldn't change anything. My wedding-deal with it. SOrry I am cold hearted. Your SIL is being a total Beetch.

Im sorry that this happened...she would be called in my book sisterinlazilla...its your wedding NOT hers and she has to realize that ...and the way she is acting is like a child ..and needs to grow up ...i would not deal with that crap and you should not too.....good luck ..and put your foot down!

What about a compromise? Tell her that you will do a short white dress with a matching sash... if she is only 4 years old then there is no way in the world that 'tiny' bit of white will steal away from you.

At the end of the day your wedding is ONE day.... but FAMILY is forever :)

Good Luck!

wow what a bad situation, sorry you are going through it

Normally i would say it is your wedding it is up to you, but if it tears apart the family it just isnt worth it imo. I have to say, i do agree with FSIL about a 3 year old being in a wine color, that is pretty dark. i think you should just let her have what she wants this time...and only this time!

to me, the FG dress isn't that big a deal so i'd let just let her buy whatever she wants to keep the peace.

however, i do agree with you that the FG dress should have been your choice, not hers.

good luck with this crappy situation!

So sorry that you are going throigh this and I completely agree that you are in the right...However, it is not always about being right so although she is totally out of order to keep the piece, just be the bigger person and let her wear the dress that she wants. At the end of the day, it is a small part of your wedding, keep the piece.

What is your FH saying? Does he know she is being a BE-YACH!

At first, I got indignant for you. Who is she to decide on the dresses for your wedding! But then I read the above and I agree with it. She is being really immature and rude, but it seems like you really want a relationship with the daughter, which may mean swallowing a bitter pill. I also like the sash idea.

I guess I am the stubborn one. I say no, don't give in. Its a slippery slope with people like your SIL. If you let something this small go in the beginning, she will keep pushing the limit as to what she can get away with. Also, have you cleared the air with the rest of family- informing them you did not kick her out, and your SIL is taking her out if you don't meet her demands?

My in-laws and I have a push-push back relationship. I gave into things I didn't think were right in the beginning and now regret it. Whenever they want something their way, they bring up the times I gave in and how wonderful it worked out (wonderful in their eyes- NOT mine).

I would Definitely talk to FH and make sure you 2 are on the same page also

This whole idea of 'it's your wedding and you get whatever you want' can't always hold true. In this case it doesn't seem to be worth the fight. Let her wear whatever dress at this point!

You definitely shouldn't have to put up with her craziness and you should be able to have the FG wear the dress you pick, but for the sake of family, I think I would just give in. As a compromise, can you have the FGs wear the same dress and the BMs but in a different, coordinating color - something lighter but that still goes with the wedding colors?

IMO, it's not worth the crazy. I'd change the dress to shut her up and then never speak to her voluntarily again.

Hi Chill,

That is a wonderful idea, however the other 4 flower girls have already ordered their dresses back in October. They all guesstimated sizes because that particular dress has been discontinued. This is indeed a mess.
