Re: HELP Teachers!!

I believe they should have rhyming, blending, they should be able to discriminate sounds, they should begin working on colors and shapes thats all I can think of right now lol I do hope this is what u were talking about

I agree. My Ring Bearer is doing rhyming right now, and his mom got him a whole bunch of Dr. Seuss books.

With First Graders, I know my cousin (our FG) is working with very small chapter books. You can't go wrong with something like 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' or 'Where the Wild Things Are' either.

I would google 'Guided Reading.' That's what we're taught in all of my Language Arts classes for ELED, and I've seen it in action. It works.

I hope this helps! Good luck!

Re: HELP Teachers!!

hey dana! when i worked with the younger kids at the hospital (k-2ns graders) i used the I CAN READ BOOK SERIES they go by different levels the easier books are like dr suess books you know like 'go dog go' and 'hop on pop' that do rhymes and colors and things like that then as the levels get harder the reading skill increases to longer sentences and paragraphs i think the 'Little Bear' and 'Frog and Toad' books are part of the more advanced series...hope that helps good luck with your new job!

ETA: i did a google search just to double check that i had the name of the series right and i found the web site http://www.icanread.com/

Re: HELP Teachers!!

I taught 1st grade for 4 years. If you are looking for books at their instructional level, you'll need to keep it very simple and find some word familiy rhyming books. Any type of children's picture book is better for reading aloud to them, not for them on their own. And I'm assuming since it's a clinic, these kids are probably at the pre-primer,/primer stages of reading. I would stick to blends, short vowel word families, sight words, and decoding skills. Stick with texts that have short repettive phrases such as Brown Bear, Brown Bear...or easy short vowl readers such as The Cat Sat on a Mat.
Hope that helps!
