I am trying to find bridesmaid dresses that don't look the role. I was going to have the girls get their dresses made by someone in the bridal building (all same color, but they choose their own style) but I don't know if the cost is fair. The woman quoted me $250-$300 per bridesmaid (this includes all alterations and a dresses designed by each person). Is that price fair? I don't want to make my bridesmaids go into debt. I was also thinking about the Mori Lee affairs collection. They have reasonable dresses that look cute and not overly bridesmaid-y. Any other suggestions besides J Crew and Ann Taylor??? I feel like I am trying to make the girls happy, but someone is going to complain regardless. Please help! Here is the link to the Mori Lee dresses.

Re: Help to find a non-bridesmaid-y looking dress
Hi, in terms of price, $250-$300 is a common range but you could also find dresses for a lot less if you want. Mine are around $180 because some of my bridesmaids are in various financial situations and I didn't want them to spend more. Would you consider something off the rack to be less bridesmaid-y? Lord and Taylor has a huge selection of dresses, and they even have a lot of plus sized dresses in the same styles as the regular if you have bridesmaids in different sizes. The JLM group (Jim Hjelm, Alvina Valenta) have gorgeous dresses that are a little sexier than your average bridesmaid dresses, though you're still probably looking around $300 each. Another consideration is Butter by Nadia - it's one dress but the top is actually these 2 long scarves so you could 'wrap' them anyway you want to make unique dresses. They are not bridesmaidy but not very formal either.

I would look at Pricilla of Boston. THe Vineyard and Melissa Sweet dresses are very nice and they are reasonably priced. I used Vineyard long dresses and they were $198

You should check out J. Crew and Thread Design - both had untraditional 'occasion' dresses in a variety of styles. Good luck!

Re: Help to find a non-bridesmaid-y looking dress
before you go out of your way to cater to your bridesmaids, i would talk to them about it.
i am picking something with a more flowy material, that they may be able to wear again...but i do realize that some girls just wont do it regardless.
so talk to them and make sure they care enuff before you drive yourself nuts
if they really dont care at all, and never plan to wear it again, i would stick with somethin under $200...

I don't think you should be put off by a brand if it's specifically a 'bridesmaid' brand-- alot of them now have dresses that are very classy and don't look like your average bridesmaid dress.
I got Bari Jay dresses where the bottom part of the skirt comes off, so they can wear it as a cocktail dress later and I got it for the best price at RK Bridal too!
Also check out Jim Hjelm (beautiful collection), Dessi (a little more bridesmaidy but still very pretty) and Nordstroms!
