I'm new to LIW and have recently begun planning. So far FH and I have a church, a reception hall, and a photographer. I've been reading all of your posts for months (thanks for all of the secret advice) and since I became addicted to reading the posts decided to join myself.
I'm looking for help finding wedding music. We're between a band and a dj. We thought dj for economical reasons, but would love a band. Any recommendations for either?

Re: Help w/ Music
We was torn between both as well. We decided to ultimately go with a DJ to save money. However, we have incorporated a few live elements, and stayed within budget. We are having a string trio for the ceremony, and added a percussionist for all 5 hours of the reception. Good luck with whatever you choose!

of course it depends on your budget and taste, but I would recommend a DJ with live elements (singer, percussionist, etc). you get the best of both worlds AND its so much cheaper!

Re: Help w/ Music
We went with a DJ we are not really into the live element
But I agree with the others try a DJ and incorporate some live bits as well...possibly during CH

We went with a band but it's pretty cheap because it's a friend. I could get you their name and info if you want. They are an older group of strange men but they are soooooo awesome!!! Hmmmmmm... let me know...

Re: Help w/ Music
we are going with a dj because of budget and also because we feel that bands are somewhat limited with what they can perform (or at least the ones we had seen in the past were ) unless you can get a really big one IMO
i do like the ideas the girls had about adding some percussionists and singers thoough i might loook into that

FH wanted a DJ , I wanted a Band. We went with Bravura which is a mix of both and could not be happier. They are more expensive than your average DJ, but not as expensive as a full band.. They are amazing and there are A LOT of 2011 brides using them !!

yeah we're limiting ourselves to a dj bc of $, plus honestly I dont think my FHs family is going to appreciate the awesomeness of a band.

We went with a band because that's what my FH really wanted. I wanted a dj, so our compromise is we have a singer/guitarist/keyboardist during CH, and a Frank Sinatra singer during salad/pasta/dinner.

If you go the DJ route, check out LI Sound. They are very professional and are not looking to spend your money. They will work to get you everything you want and stay within your budget.
Also, check out Body Rock. They did an awesome job at FBIL/FSIL's wedding.

my fiance and i were torn between using a band and a dj also. we decided to go with bravura, so we're getting a mixture of both. it was a little more than we wanted to spend, but well worth it. they're amazing - i was beyond impressed.

Congrats and Welcome!!!
Bands and DJs are both Great.. Some companies you can mix up live bands with a DJ. We are personally going with a DJ who is a Close friend of mine. He owns his own DJ Company and they are AWESOME!!!!! Let me know if you want his info Happy Planning!!!

Congrats and Welcome!!!!
FH and i decided to go with FM entertainment! We loved what they showed us and everything they offered.
If your really torn between a band and a DJ, if you hire a DJ you can always add some live musicians to somewhat equal out the differences between just having a DJ or just having a band... GOOD LUCK!!!

I feel like the best mix is a DJ with live music ... It can be pricey but so worth it! Bands are great as long as you get an amazing band ... and truly they can BREAK the band!
We personally love a DJ. We want a non-stop dance feel!

Re: Help w/ Music
Thank you all so much for being so welcoming and also for all of your tips. This week we have appointments with LI Sound and Faze 4 (not sure if I spelled that correctly).
My cousin used Bravura and had a steel drum band at her CH and the dj at her reception; they were great. How much should I expect to spend on a dj or band? (dj including some form of live music)
