Do an internet search on 'find apartment long island', a lot of stuff comes up.
I live in Coram, and there are developments all over the place around here, and I always see 'available' signs. You may be able to just drive around and find something.
Just a couple of ideas.

NYonlinerealty.com is great.... we used them to find ours... I wish I knew earlier... we just check out of ours yesterday in old bethpage

were moving out of our rented house in March/April. I LOVE it, but with the baby coming and my parents offered for us to have their apartment for SO MUCH less, wed be crazy not to take it. Its in patchogue between sunrise and the LIE. All brand new everything 2 bedroom, fenced yard, lake view etc. We pay $1200

Jackie, do an online search for the pennysaver online. We found our apt. in Lindenhurst on there. I also tried Craigslist & newsday.com
Lindenhurst is a great town...FH calls it Mayberry. It's like a flashback to the 50's & everyone is involved w/ the church and its a quaint town & close to the water. We're paying 1250 for our 2 bedroom apt in the top floor of a house.

We are moving out of ours soon. Its in West BAbylon in an apartment complex. They allow pets also. FM me if you are interested. We are closing on a house in a couple of weeks.
