HELP! WWYD? (What Would You Do?)

Last month my DH and I bought each other watches for our anniversary from Fortunoff's. The sales associate told us that if we were approved for a Fortunoff's card we can get deferred payments plus an additional 10% off.

So, I applied for the card. A few minutes later the man came back and told me it was declined , and I would get a letter in the mail explaining why. I asked him if we can get any $$ off since we were buying two expensive watches. He went and asked his manager, and came back with the ok. I can't remember how much extra he took off, but it was somewhere between 5 and 10%. So, we bought the watches and I put them on my mastercard.

Yesterday, I get something in the mail from Fortunoff's. Ah, it must be the letter explaining why I was declined. Open it up...Nope, it's the Fortunoff's credit card! I was approved ??!!

Now, I am mad. I could have had 6 months to pay this off interest free instead of paying interest on my mastercard. Plus, I could have had the additional 10% off (I would have still asked for an additional discount for buying 2 watches ). Why would he tell me I was declined??

Should I call and complain? What should I say? Will it get me anywhere? What would you do??

I would call to find out why that sales person told u were denied then get a card...Doesnt make sense

I would be mad too! but unfortunately, I don't think complaining will get you too far...
What probably happened is you were initially declined, and then after further review, someone in Foutuneoff's credit dept. decided to give it to you...
Your sales guy probably wasn't lying, but that doesn't really help you now.

I would call the store manager, and complain, and tell them you expect to be reimbursed for the interest you have incurred for these past months....Hey, It can't hurt to try right???

ETA - It might have just been that you weren't approved for that amount of money....Check the card...Maybe it has a very small limit!!

SOunds like someone might have been working on commission! Or the other thing was maybe you weren't approved for that program but you were approved for the credit card. Either way I would call and I would find out why and demand that you get that 10% off!!

I would call and demand an explanation - he told you that you would get an explanation for getting declined- whether you were declined then and approved now - doesnt mean you still do not deserve an explantion for the initial denial - Call - it can only help you...

I would definately call & complain! I did with my living room set when my table came damaged & had to wait for them to send another. Anyway they took a nice amount off the cost of the table and sent us a fortunoff gift card!

yes! call and ask what happened.....be nice about tit though so they'll be willing to work with you.
but if they were willing to take a percentage off when you were buying htem, i dont' see why they wouldn't work with you on this also!

When I worked in a store, if you weren't approved for express credit, you still could be approved it just took longer to process. They needed to do further background work. If you are a good customer, they can do a background check on you through past credit card purchases, I am sure they will do something for you.

Thanks everyone!

I called and they were so nice! I explained the situation, and the woman said they will refund my mastercard, take 10% off, and transfer the balance to the Fortunoff's card!

I asked her why I was told I was declined, and she said it's definitely not the first time its happened.

I do credit apps at work all the time and when they need more info they usually just ask to speak to the customer, or keep you on hold until they are done reviewing the info. I've never had a situation where a customer was initially declined b/c the app needed further review! I had no idea that could happen!
