Help/opinions: *NOT* offending FILs

Help/opinions: *NOT* offending FILs

Hi All,
No matter what FH and I try to do, FILs think we are offending them, no matter how hard we try to do the right thing.

FH is so afraid that we will be doing something not proper during the next few days leading up to the wedding.

Here is what is going on. Please tell me if you see something potentially offensive to them.

-Wed night: RD at FIL's house (BBQ). I am bringing groom's cake. FMIL doesn't want me to bring anything else, even though I keep offering. FMIL is terribly sick right now (bad cold) and we have offered to cancel the dinner or to have it at our house. She wants to host it still. She hired someone to help her out.
We got them both gifts already (earrings for FMIL and a cool brass bottle opener for FFIL).
FH created a slide show of pics of us growing up, including family pics, and even pics of his sister who has done some really terrible things to us in the past 2 years. At the end, he has a screen that thanks our families and lets them know how much we love them.

-Thurs night: Rehearsal. FMIL and FFIL aren't coming. They say they never go (FH is last of 8 kids to be married). Don't see how we can offend them if they aren't going to be there. After the rehearsal, FH is going to sleep at their house.

-Fri: Wedding. FILs do not want to be in the limos.
I have special flowers for FMIL that she wanted.
I already ran by the order of the receiving line with FMIL and she was amenable to it.
I would like both sets of parents to light the unity candle tapers but FH thinks FFIL won't do it, so I guess we'll just have my mom and FMIL do it, but FH will check with FMIL if FFIL would light it or not.

I'm so sorry that the week of your wedding you even have to be worrying about this. Let them get offended, you should not have to tip toe around for your big day, or EVER in my opinion. But I'm sure none of that will change by Friday, so all I can say is good luck and I am sure things will be great!

Your worried about offending them?
Sounds like they are the ones doing the offending.

It also sounds like you are doing everything you can for these people. You can't please people who don't want to be pleased. Why aren't they going to the Rehearsal? Has your FH expressed the importance of this event? FFIL won't light the unity candle? Did you ask him about it? This all sounds very strange to me. I wouldn't worry about them! Good luck! I would just keep smiling!

Enjoy your day!!!

Honestly, I would STOP worrying about offending them. With everything you posted above you are not doing anything offensive AT ALL. If they are offended, that is THEIR issue, not yours, and they should deal with it. It is your wedding, don't forget that!! Unless you are being intentionally rude or disrespectful to these people (which you are not!) don't give it a second thought. As someone said above, some people can't be happy and there's nothing you can do about that

I really don't see what you are doing that could offend anyone. It sounds like you are being gracious all around.

Thanks girls. FH's family come from a different era almost. They are so different from my family and they think we've done so many horrible things in the past (long story but his sister had said and done terrible things about/to us and they believe everything she says). I just don't want any problems or their being unhappy to ruin our day. Thank you for the support!

I think your FILs should thank their lucky stars that they have such a wonderful son and are inheriting a gracious and thoughtful daughter-in-law.

They're weird. Don't worry. Enjoy your wedding!!!
