Here is Alyssa's birth story:

At about 3:30am Sunday morning (3/14/04) I woke up and my undies were slightly wet. I went to the bathroom & it happened a little more with a little bit of a pink tinge. I woke up my husband and told him that something was leaking and I didn't know what to do.I also believe I lost my mucus plug the day before. I asked him if I should call the dr. He said yes. I was afraid that I was going to be waking up the dr over something that didn't mean anything because I wasn't having any contractions and it was a little over 5 wks until my EDD. Anyway, I called the dr at about 4am and he told me to meet him at the hospital.
The dr checked me out and found that I was in fact leaking amniotic flluid and that at this point in the pregnancy, he would have to induce me.He said I was 1 centimeter dialated. I asked if I could use the bathroom first and as I walked into the hospital bathroom,my water broke all over the place. I was trying to wipe up the floor with paper towels and then I told the nurse who told me to leave it and they would have someone clean up.
The dr went away for a little while and came back and went to check me because he was going to start inducing me. Thats when my water broke more. (Both times it seemed like 1/2 gallon of fluids came out. )
I started getting cramps and they just kept getting stronger so finally I asked for something. They gave me a little bit of Demerol to take the edge off.
The dr told us that it usually takes between 12-48 hours to deliver once you are induced. So my husband went home to get a few things for me and call the family. He was back within an hour and just in time. The dr said I was progressing so quickly.
I was walked into the labor and delivery room and just waited for the drs cue that I was ready. In the meantime I was in so much pain and asked for an epideral.(I went from having no contractions to ready to deliver in just a couple of hours.)
The dr said that he wouldn't give me an epideral because I had progressed so quickly that I would be delivering very soon.
I waited for the dr to tell me I was now fully dialated and ready to push.
My DH watched in amazement. He said the baby is right there. Push ,push!
And then I heard my DH say 'ITS A GIRL!'
She was born on 3/14/04 at 9:25am. She weighed 5 lbs 5 oz and is 19' long.
I got to hold her for a few minutes and then she was taken away to a different part of the room where they cleaned her up.
My DH and I didn't get to have her in my room at the hospital like all the other mommies after their deliveries because she was premature. She was put in NICU. We would constantly be going back to NICU all day and night to see her and hold her.
I was discharged from the hospital on Tuesday and we took our time because we didn't want to leave without our baby.
We just wanted to stay there with her as long as we could.
Alyssa is doing well. We are hoping that we will be able to take her home very soon.
They are just taking care of her now because she is a preemie and they have to make sure that she is strong enough to come home.

Re: Here is Alyssa's birth story:

Sue what a story! It sounds so similar to mine. I posted on your other post about not being able to take her home. Please read it, I know exactly how you feel.

I wasn't even able to see Sophia for 24 hours after she was born becuase I was in such awful condition. It was so horrible - I will never forget it.

Dont' worry about her being a preemie. Sophia is just as tough as the next guy...just a little smaller! She's progressing totally normally, and is a bundle of joy. Your nature will be to comfort Alyssa constantly and you do just that. Dont' let anybody tell you to put her down, or let her cry, etc. She had a special start and needs a little extra care.

Good luck mommy and if you need any advice, please let me know!

Oh, Sue!! Thanks for sharing, the induction and delivery time sounds EXACTLY like mine! Lyla was born within a few hours of induction, and I only had contractions for a couple of hours. So, when you look back now after feeling the pain without any medication, how do you feel about it?

It must be hard not having her at home, but she will be with you in no time! Enjoy her!!

Re: Here is Alyssa's birth story:

What a great story. Which dr. delivered Alyssa? Did they get a chance to give you the Pitocin or did labor start on its own? I would have been trying to clean the floor up myslelf too. Women are certainly silly when they are in labor. You have almost the same story as me but I was having contractions when I went to get checked at the hospital since my water broke. I just didn't know it. I got there at 8AM and did not really feel them till 10:30. By 1:50 I was complete.

Hope you can have her home soon.
