Wacky - in last weeks Newsday it was quoted that the median price for a house in Nassau County was $400K. I'll be saving for a LONG time!

Let me tell you, while FH and I were looking we saw some houses that made my physically ill. Dad is a contractor and even he said to just walk out!!!!
I wish you luck - you and hubby will find something. Its a long road but its worth it in the end!!!

wacky, I feel your pain! We scoured the North Shore from Great Neck to Shoreham...with no luck.
We found some reasonably priced homes in East Northport, but the taxes there were pretty high.
How far out east are you willing to go? We looked in Mt. Sinai, Miller Place, Sound Beach but decided we didn't want to be that far east.
We love Glen Head-we have family there-but were scared away by the prices. As I understand, the taxes there are reasonable (by LI standards) due to an abatement they get for having a power plant in town.
Good luck and keep your eyes peeled. Your home sweet home is out there!

if you are looking for the north fork Riverhead, Calverton, Greenport or Miller Place are probably the cheapest but the prices are still up there.

Miller Place is def. more expensive than Riverhead, Greenport, or Calverton....but the others are in the 'less expensive' range, but heck, they're all expensive now.

thing to keep in mind...the school districts out there...calverton feeds into Riverhead, as does parts of Manorville. Greenport is rough compared to Mattituck and Southold...and yes Wacky, the drive for most is just way too far!!
We looked at a place in Manorville(South Manor District) and I think the commute into Port Washington might be too much...
(I should really proof read before I hit send:)

Im not sure if anyone mentioned it yet but Plainview has some affordable houses in some areas. My friend just bought a cape for about $375. I know its a lot for a cape but they are paying for the location!

Re: Hey What are some nice affordable areas on the North Shore
$375K isn't so bad for Plainview - I work in the area and there are a few streets I wouldn't want to be on - namely the ones right on or off of S. Oyster Bay Rd. Overall it's a nice town though.
Oh and about the distance discussion earlier - location is all relative. If you have to commute far into Queens or NYC, mid to Eastern Suffolk isn't possible, at least for us. I know some people do it, but I could never, nor could I ever ask DH too sit on a train half of his life
Then again, if you work nearby then great, no headaches with a long commute!

I really believe its a numbers game at this point. You just have to keep looking. Once you decide on an area keep drving around talking to agents looking through the paper and internet. New opportunities come up every day and you never know what the sellers situation is until you make an offer. You could find a situation where someone needs/wants to seel quickly and if you are in the right place at the right time and all the stars align perfectly......
