Re: Hey What are some nice affordable areas on the North Shore
I think almost all areas of the North Shore are expensive. Probably the most affordable way to do it would be to go out to Suffold - (and probably far out). The North Shore is very beautiful!!

I'd say Suffolk, North Shore. Even that is still very expensive.
How about Central? Still expensive, but you won't be on the South Shore? I'm Central but much closer to North Shore.

Glen Cove is nice and so is Bayville. They both have some affordable areas

Re: Hey What are some nice affordable areas on the North Shore
honestly? None! I grew up there too and couldn't afford my parent's garage right now
The parts of Glen Cove that I've noticed are affordable aren't the nicest sections IMO - there are a few less desireable areas and it's not in the NS school district.
I guess the farther out East you go, it gets a little better, but even Stony Brook, etc is really getting up there. The entire NS is beautiful and I'd love to live there, but it ain't happening just yet

I live in the Smithtown/St. James area, and while it's not cheap, it's not ridiculous either.

Re: Hey What are some nice affordable areas on the North Shore
I live on the north shore of Nassau County (in East Norwich, which is bordered by Oyster Bay, Syosset, Muttontown, etc.). We bought 3 years years ago and we were certain we bought at the height of the market, which of course we look at now and know that's not true.
I think that you get more land for your buck on the north shore. We both grew up on the south shore and had looked there for while.
If you look in the right places, you can find a home in these north shore towns that you can afford. While we don't live in a million dollar home, we love our little home and our backyard.
Other towns I love on the north shore are: Port Washington Roslyn Sea Cliff Oyster Bay Bayville (but I always hesitate to add that because it seems so remote from everything)

I also grew up on the north shore in suffolk and I could not afford a house there now, and forget about nassau!!! I never imagined I would live on the south shore but after doing some house hunting - the north shore, especially in nassau, was really out of the question. Now i'm adjusting.

I'm with Curly........we just bought in E. Northport and we paid a good amount of money. Good thing he and I work!!!
Prices are ridiculous. I'm happy that since we bought 3 months ago my house value has gone up but I wonder how my brother is ever going to afford to live here.

Just for a ballpark on the North Shore. FI just bought a coop(that's right a one bedroom apartment) for 195,000 in Huntington Village. I don't really think that there are to many reasonable north shore places anymore, unless you are willing to go east.

Re: Hey What are some nice affordable areas on the North Shore
Believe me, any nice NS town in Nassau is at least $550K or so....you can't get into a nice section of Port Wash for under that definitely, and the taxes are now about $8k+.....
Roslyn Heights has some shady areas (near the train sta I believe) and Glen Head is the same as Port Wash!
I think you can only get one for less than $500K is if it's in a shady section or needs a TON of work.
Out east might be a little more reasonable, but still up there I'm sure.

Re: Hey What are some nice affordable areas on the North Shore
call me a pessimist, but I also look at like this: The market has been crazy for a few yrs now, so by now, there's no stone left unturned as far as finding a gem in a NS area - it's just not happening without a TON of work needed or some other really big problem....so I don't even look there anymore.
We now focus on the realistic areas of LI - what an oxymoron

Re: Hey What are some nice affordable areas on the North Shore
none! That's why I still rent for now I cannot believe the avg home price in Nassau is now $400K - I really didn't think I'd see that happen - especially in the areas that are totally not worth it, IMO
