Hi everyone, I'm new here. My fiancee and I just got engaged last weekend, and it took me about a week to figure out how to find the forums and post on them
Anyway, so I feel a little overwhelmed with the whole process of beginning to plan the weddding. I want to take about a year, so I'm hoping to get married in May 2009, but we haven't set an actual date yet because we're waiting to pick a reception hall and see what dates they have available. We have appointments to see Fox Hollow and Cresthollow Manor this weekend, and Woodbury Country Club, The Riviera and the Swan club the following weekend. I want to pick a place as quickly as possible so we can set a date!
I know that my fiancee is very concerned with how much this whole thing is going to cost. I have saved some money, plus I am supposed to receive about $25k from my grandmother who recently passed away. My parents also want to help if we need the money, and the actually took a home equity line of credit for that reason. My fiancee is very weary about accepting any of this, but I just want to plan the wedding I['ve always dreamed of (nothing really extravagant, but still, I don't exactly want to be cheap about things either and not have things the way I want it). He's also said that if there's a huge different in price we should consider getting married in the winter, which I originally wanted to do, but based upon when he proposed to me we would have to have a really long engagement (because I really don't want to be rushed and plan a wedding in six months).
Anyway, I think that's enough of my babbling. Anyone have any advice for someone who's just starting the madness??

Congrats and welcome! It's totally normal to start feeling overwhelmed already. There is a lot to plan! But if you take it one vendor at a time you'll have it all done in no time! I'd book your reception hall first. You can't do anything else until you know the date, and they are the hardest to find.
Someone once said to me the average NYC metro wedding costs around 45K from start to finish (this includes dresses, favors, gifts for attendants, and all the big name stuff). If you've got money from your grandma you will have no problem making the difference up. I know it seems like a lot of money, and it definitely is, but somehow you do manage to find a lot of money from all kinds of sources to pay. So don't worry too much and good luck!
