Hi I'm new here

Hi everyone, I'm new here. My fiancee and I just got engaged last weekend, and it took me about a week to figure out how to find the forums and post on them

Anyway, so I feel a little overwhelmed with the whole process of beginning to plan the weddding. I want to take about a year, so I'm hoping to get married in May 2009, but we haven't set an actual date yet because we're waiting to pick a reception hall and see what dates they have available. We have appointments to see Fox Hollow and Cresthollow Manor this weekend, and Woodbury Country Club, The Riviera and the Swan club the following weekend. I want to pick a place as quickly as possible so we can set a date!

I know that my fiancee is very concerned with how much this whole thing is going to cost. I have saved some money, plus I am supposed to receive about $25k from my grandmother who recently passed away. My parents also want to help if we need the money, and the actually took a home equity line of credit for that reason. My fiancee is very weary about accepting any of this, but I just want to plan the wedding I['ve always dreamed of (nothing really extravagant, but still, I don't exactly want to be cheap about things either and not have things the way I want it). He's also said that if there's a huge different in price we should consider getting married in the winter, which I originally wanted to do, but based upon when he proposed to me we would have to have a really long engagement (because I really don't want to be rushed and plan a wedding in six months).

Anyway, I think that's enough of my babbling. Anyone have any advice for someone who's just starting the madness??

welcome! As far as Reception hall searching, it is helpful to kind of decide what sorts of thigns are important to you. For example, we knew we wanted waterview so we were able to eliminate quite a few halls. We also knew that we wanted to get married in Suffolk, so that helped! This site has a really comprehensive guide to reception halls so do some research and you will be in good shape! Congrats!

Re: Hi I'm new here

Welcome. I am a May 2009 bride! We booked our reception hall fast (once we started looking). I got engaged of July 2007, started looking and booked in Oct 2007. He only visited Westbury Manor, Cresthollow, Fox Hollow and The Inn. We ended up going for the most expensive of the 4 but I just loved it and it was a new place where nobody I knew had gotten married and 5 minutes from my mom and dad.

My advice is to be open to different times of the year. I was ready to book a Sunday night to save $ but FH was very much against it. I was also open to Feb. but my mom nixed that. We tried Nov. too but Nov. 2008 was all booked up and we vowed to keep our engagement no longer than 2 years so I ended up in May of 2009. Def. consider Fridays and Sundays and be open to other times of the year - it will be a huge savings.

FH and I are paying for a big may wedding solo. It is not easy by any means and sometimes I really wish I insisted on a Sunday or a cooler month!

Congrsts! Looks like you'll have a lot of help so thats great. As for money saving....I myself ALWAYS wanted a winter wedding but to answer your question...Prices can be almost 1/2 compared to those in high season. I did all the research because we are paying ourselves and had to be aware of our budget. I am so thankful that I wanted winter cuz we could never have afforded what we wanted in the summer....FM me if ya need help with prices!

welcome to the board and congrats on your engagement! usually the winter months are A LOT cheaper then may because its considered pretty much the prime time to get married. theres nothing wrong with a long engagement! i got engaged in october and im not getting married till august of 09. a lot of girls on here have the same type of long engagement. anyways enjoy the engagement!!! and welcome to the site!

Re: Hi I'm new here

Welcome to the boards and congrats on your engagement! My name is Stephanie..

First take a deep breath! I was the same way when I first got enaged. It was like he put the ring on my finger and I started thinking a mile a minute. Your off to a great start. You already made your RH appointments. Get that done first. Set the date, then proceed to book all your major vendors... photo, video, flowers, limo. If you shop around. You can find affordable vendors. You'll be fine! Take time to enjoy this feeling! Being in engaged is the best!!!!

Also remember, we're all here to help!!

Oh and PS.. Being enaged a year isn't a long engagement, its actually about average! Girl, On our wedding Day, Me and my FH will be engaged almost 2 and a half years!!! Now thats long!!

Re: Hi I'm new here

Welcome!I am planning a 2/09 wedding. We got engaged on 2/08 and we got the RH, but we are only starting to do vendors now, 10 months in advance. Would you consider a March 09 wedding? You might still get the cheaper winter pricing and you still have 11 months to plan! that is plenty of time, as long as within the next month or two you can find an RH and start looking for a dress! I had a friend who planned a wedding in under 2 months and it was great!

Congrats and Welcome!!!

You are not behind in your planning at all! I know someone who got engaged in december and is getting married in 3 weeks and everything is done!

I would def look at the Brides review but just keep in mind that everyone has their own opinions and everyone will think different things.

I'm getting married at the Riviera so if you have any questions feel free to ask!!

First, ask us anything you want, this site makes it easy and fun to plan your wedding.

Second, consider a Sunday, even on Memorial Day Weekend, for some savings in May.
