i think it is called the greenbelt trail bu it is in suffolk
also google hike long island something should come up

any good trails upstate, but not too long of a drive? maybe westchester or a little farther?

There is a good book called '30 hikes with 30 miles of the city' or it's '60 hikes with 60 miles. Not sure which one, but anyway it's great. There are some good hikes at Bear Mountain and Black mountain which aren't far at all.
