So, I am really torn about this whole issue. I would love nothing more than to support small businesses or individuals as vendors. I have seen alot of great work such as hair, makeup even DJ's that are NOT under a blanket company. I just can't help to be nervous about reliability. I don't think anyone would deliberately not show up that day of.. but ANYTHING can happen and I really think going with a company at least gives you a back up plan. Thoughts?? I spoke to a popular makeup artist and asked if she had a backup plan... she just said she has an assistant I have not read one bad review on her etc.. but not the answer I was hoping for!!
Really anything can happen that day and the thought of scrambling for a vendor the day of is a nightmare! Not sure if anyone else has the same concern or am I just being a nervous nelly

Re: Hiring individuals vs. companies
i think either way its a risk... you need to discuss when all the vendors if they have a back up plan if it something youre concerned about

Re: Hiring individuals vs. companies
For makeup I am using an individual probably but it is FH cousin best friend. Although I am still really concerned like you said if something happens. My only advice is make sure you have a good relationship with them in case something does happen you know exactly what will be done.

I agree with what Ang said- make sure you speak to all vendors about it because it's a risk either way. I used both big companies and invidiuals for mine and all worked out great.

FH and I always prefer working with smaller companies and individual people. We like supporting the new people starting out and I think we get a better deal with negotiating because they need your business more. You also know who your getting on your day... JMO!!

I agree with you. My friend hired a makeup artist for her wedding and the day before she CANCELLED! Last minute we all went to MAC and THANKFULLY found a great makeup artist there that saved the day. I think its always best to have your own backup plan just in case

Re: Hiring individuals vs. companies
There is always a risk no matter what. What is important is to have a contract and make sure your vendor is insured in the event of a problem. Larger companies have different risks such as firing the person you consulted with (florist, photographer, etc) and a small 1 man shop may or may not have a backup person you've met. I think your most valuable tool in planning is your judgement and instinct. Trust it and you'll do fine.
PS. All my vendors are strictly WOM including my DJ who I went to HS with and does it on the side but they all have insurance and an outlined backup
