Ughhhhhh. Getting to Alaska is NOT easy. Anyone know Sarah Palin??? Maybe I could just borrow her private jet????
We were booked on a flight out of JFK at like 4:30. That would have gotten us to Seattle at 8:00 I think, and then we were to get on a plane to Fairbanks at 9:30, getting in at 12:20AM. Best I could find.
I got a call today that my JFK flight was moved to 5:00pm, making me arrive at Seattle at 8:50 - which is not enough time to transfer to the plane leaving at 9:30.
NOW, I have to leave JFK at 1:30PM and go to CINCINATTI ... then I go to Seattle, get in at 6:30 but have to wait until 9:30 to go to Fairbanks. THREE PLANES!
This whole trip has been murder to arrange. We really want to go there and go dog sledding, snowmobiling, see the Northern Lights, go to the Arctic Circle ... but getting there and home has been horrible to plan! On the way home, we are flying from Anchorage to Seattle, then to JFK. We leave at 6:30AM and we do not get home until 10PM. We are also flying from Fairbanks to Anchorage in the middle of the trip so that we don't have to have 2 stops on the way home, just one. I did that months ago because then both trips would just be one stop. Now, I have two on the way there Exact thing I was trying to avoid, and I had actually done it until today, 3 weeks before the damn trip.
SOOOOOO annoying. They have been making small changes to these flights ever since I booked them, and every time I was worried it was going to be something BIG since Ak is not a common destination for a lot of carriers ... well today was the big change.
We'll still get there but we have more stops and we'll be exhausted. It better not be costing me any more..... I think I am shipping a lot of my luggage there in case they lose it, since now the chances of that are increased.

i know its frustrating but believe it or not, that will be an experience in itself. When we had to change flights we had some funny moments and looking back we laugh at so many things that happened.

I don't have uggs Am I doomed??? I do have an ipod and just added lots of stuff to it. And I have a good book (or what I hope is a good book), Eat Pray Love, that I am saving for the flights. I might get something else too, a lighter one, in case I need comic relief.

Re: HM Flight Nightmare
Sorry to crash here, but just in case you have any other issues, there are also direct flights from Portland (OR) to Anchorage and Fairbanks many times a day and its only a half hour longer than the trip from Seattle. Plus Portland airport has much less volume and was #1 for on time departures and arrivals in the country. I know there are direct flights from JFK to Portland (I live in Portland and come home all the time this way!) Just a thought in case you run into more trouble!

Uggggh thanks. No one at expedia mentioned this as a possibility and now I think I'm booked on the cincinatti-seattle-fairbanks route. I'll look into it though - thanks

I am so not looking to packing. I have winter boots, tall heeled boots, heavy hiking shoes, sneakers, dress shoes and probably more that I need to bring. I was going to wear the tall heeled boots on the plane because they are hard to pack but they will be super uncomfortable. I know we can only have one bag checked per person and then one carry on and one personal item. Hope a backpack counts as a 'personal item' because we are both going to need them.

Re: HM Flight Nightmare
have you checked flights out of Newark on Alaska air? My uncle is a pilot on that airline and they fly to and from Newark. I know its a pain to get to newark but if its a possibility it may be worth it!

Re: HM Flight Nightmare
Definitely ship your luggage! What a great idea!!
The stress will be totally worth it!
Make the best of your stops - pick up a souvenir from each airport, play a game with DH - have fun with it.
If you go dreading it - it will be miserable. If you go in with a game plan in mind - it will be better.

Re: HM Flight Nightmare
ok, we went to St.Lucia for the hm and changed once each way. In San Juan there was an issue and we almost got cut from the plane along with 3-4 others. ...something about the weight on the plane. So odd because it is not like they weighed the passengers The travel will be all worth it ! You have been posting about your trip to Alaska and it sounds wonderful.
