Re: HM Question

We were in Ireland for 8 days and basically were told to bring about $100 per day, but I didn't plan to charge much at all because the exchange rate is so awful on CCs. (BTW: do NOT forget to call your CC company and your ATM card / bank before you go so your card doesn't get a fraud alert on it from being used in another country! two minutes can save you HUGE hassles.)

For our HM which was 10 days in France, we took about 1300 euros with us (we had to pay our B&B in cash) and I ended up taking out another €300 from an ATM there.

You are sooooo lucky to be going now when the rate is a zillion times better! When we went last summer, it was closer to $1.41 per € and now it's like $1.21!!!

Have a great trip!

i'm not so sure we can. we will only be on the mainland in athens for two nights, then the islands for the following 12 nights... we plan to make most our purchases from the local markets and i doubt they accept travelers' checks.

When I've gone out of the country my hotels would cash my travelers checks. So when I was in local markets I only had a little bit of cash on me and kept the rest of the checks in the safe in my room.

I always used them too when traveling internationally for the protection as well.

i would bring as much as you would feel comfortable holding. there is no right or wrong

Re: HM Question

We got some at the airport, worst idea ever, and then we would just get some at the ATM, accordingly. No matter what you do, you will be charged up the wazoo for the exchange rate. Yes, the euro is down but you still will be charged. I think our bank charged us 8 dollars for every hundred.

All that being said, take as much as you feel comfortable with. I would strongly advise NOT to bring travelers checks with you. You do not want to spend a long time at bank on your vacation.

almost all hotels will definitely cash travelers checks, i would recommend going this route to avoid having a lot of money at one time.

Re: HM Question

I checked 2 weeks ago and the euro exchange rate is about $1.19 for every one of our dollars because of all the unrest over seas. It's a HUGE improvement even from a couple months ago.

That being said - someone did mention telling your bank/cc companies you are going over seas. I work in a bank and people have that problem all the time - thinking it's okay to just use it - your card will be basically invalid because they'll think it was stolen.

Besides that, I would bring $200/day... but it depends on what you're planning to do in every place. Ask your travel agent ...or if you don't have one, email one and they'll tell you.. they're very helpful.
