Did you purchase travelers cheques or get foreign currency before you went? FMIL says we should get travelers cheques but I don't know how they work. We're going to an all inclusive resort so I was just planning on bringing cash for tips and for shopping. Can you use U.S. currency in the Dominican Republic?

Re: HM Question - Currency/Travelers Cheques
I think that travelers cheques are kinda out-dated. In most places in the carribean they take the american dollar. Also, if you bring your ATM card, you can always get local currency out of the ATM machine.

ditto i agree. there's a business that shares our office and they ship cargo to DR and go there frequently. they like the US dollar and traveler's cheques are kind of not used as much anymore. just carry some cash with ya---no need for traveler's cheques at all. in the past few years i've left the country like 3 or 4 times to mexico and the caribbean and only changed a small amount of money into local currency.
if you change any money--do it out there. usually the exchange rate is better
