Re: HM- Southern France
My mother is from France and we go to visit family there...My grandfather lives right outside Paris and has a summer home in the Provence region, specifically Antibes. The best place to go is Aix-en-Provence because it's a large city with the charming, cozy feel. You must see The Cathedral Saint Sauveur is stunning, Gothic revival, and Cours Mirabeau is the main thoroughfare through Aix. Cannes, Marseille, and Nice are all beautiful, but I encourage you to check out the smaller towns to get an authentic experience (Cannes is so Americanized now). You cann take small boats and helicopters to different areas, to Monaco, to the Riviera, depending on where you are. The food is delicious southern Provence-style, lots of garden herbs, roasts, fish, etc.
If you get the chance to go a little further north, you must check out the Perigord region and try the foie gras (I mean, go to the duck farm and get it FRESH) and the red wine from the Perigord and Brittany regions is unbelievable. And real champagne from the Champagne region (they have tours). My favorite place to go in France during the spring is Fontainbleu, where my grandmother is from, and the estates at Giverny (where Monet lived/painted).
If I could live in France, I would...It's one of my most very favorite places ever!

I haven't but my Mom has. She loved it. A lot of the places down there are extremely formal- you have to be super dressed and cannot wear open toed shoes. Crazy, right? I am actually visiting Nice during my honeymoon. The cruise stops there and I am pretty excited about that!
